Buttons for Women’s Blazers – Size, Count and Style Guide

Buttons for women’s blazers are chosen smaller than men’s – typically 24–30L on the front and 16–20L on the sleeve – and in fewer numbers, with one button on the front being the most common choice. Besides size, their role differs: in women’s styles, the button often serves as the main decorative accent, which is why metal, enamelled and fabric-covered buttons are much more common than in men’s suits.

Buttons for Women’s Blazers: Differences Compared to Men’s

Men’s blazers follow a strict canon: two or three buttons on the front, four on the sleeve, sizes that rarely change season to season. Women’s blazers are more flexible, requiring more design and technical decisions. Differences arise from the cut, lighter fabrics, and the button serving both as a fastener and jewellery.

  • Shorter front and higher waist. Less space for buttons and a higher fastening point mean larger buttons look heavy.
  • Lighter fabrics. Crepe, viscose and thin tweed cannot carry heavy metal buttons without reinforcement underneath.
  • More style variations. Blazers without lapels, “Chanel” style, double-breasted, belted or without fastening – each silhouette has its own logic.
  • Fastening on the left. Women’s buttons are usually sewn on the left side, with buttonholes on the right – opposite to men’s blazers.

Button Sizes for Blazers

Button size is measured in lignes (1L = 0.635 mm). The table is a guideline for classic styles; oversized blazers and decorative designs may use one or two sizes larger.

A practical test: place button samples on the finished prototype, not on fabric swatches. On a women’s blazer size S, a 32L button looks noticeably larger than on a catalogue sample. If unsure, order two adjacent sizes and compare on the mannequin. More on sizes and quantities is available on the sizes and quantities page.

How Many Buttons Should the Blazer Have?

Front

One button is the most versatile solution for women’s blazers: it emphasises the waist and leaves a clean lapel line. Two buttons are used on longer models and business collections, while three suit stricter, “masculine” cuts. Double-breasted blazers usually have four or six buttons, only some of which are functional; the rest are decorative.

Sleeve

Sleeves often have two or three buttons, sometimes one or none. They are almost always decorative and sewn without functional buttonholes. Higher-end collections may feature working buttonholes – a detail noticed by customers but requiring precise sleeve patterning.

Spare Button

Always provide a spare button of each size, sewn inside or in a pouch attached to the label. For decorative buttons that are hard to source individually, this builds trust in the brand.

Styles: From Classic to Luxury Blazer Buttons

The button style should match the fabric and collection character. Common directions include:

  • Tone-on-tone. Polyester or imitation horn buttons matching the fabric colour – for business and minimalist designs where buttons should not compete with the cut.
  • Gold buttons for blazers. Classic accents for navy, black and white blazers. Choosing between light gold, antique gold and satin gold changes the overall impression.
  • Luxury blazer buttons. Solid metal with relief, enamel or crystal effects, engraved brand logos, natural mother-of-pearl for light outfits.
  • Fabric-covered buttons. Covered with the same fabric or contrasting leather – for evening blazers and designs seeking a fully cohesive look.

Technical Details Often Overlooked

  1. Weight relative to fabric. Heavy metal buttons on thin crepe pull the front down. Solutions include lighter buttons, reinforcing interlinings or small backing buttons inside.
  2. Shank or holes. Metal blazer buttons usually have shanks; for hole buttons, leave a thread shank equal to lapel thickness.
  3. Buttonhole length. It equals the button diameter plus thickness. Add 1–2 mm for protruding buttons to avoid difficulty fastening.
  4. Dry cleaning. If care labels specify dry cleaning, test coating and fabric-covered button durability on samples.
  5. Matching other accessories. Metal button tone should match pocket zips, belt buckles and metal labels.

Men’s Blazer Buttons in the Women’s Collection

Women’s blazers in masculine styles sometimes use men’s buttons – larger, flatter, with classic edges. This is a valid style choice, but sizes should be reduced by one or two steps. Suitable models are in the men’s buttons section; try them on women’s prototypes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How large should the button be on a single-breasted women’s blazer?
For classic single-breasted women’s blazers, 24–30L (about 15–19 mm) is most common. Smaller sizes suit short, fitted styles in fine fabrics; larger sizes fit oversized or longer blazers. The safest way is to place samples of two adjacent sizes on the prototype and judge proportions on the mannequin.
Should sleeve buttons match those on the front?
Usually the same model in a smaller size is used for a cohesive look. Sleeves may have no buttons or simpler styles if the front has a strong decorative accent. Tone and coating must match exactly, as differences between metal batches are visible in daylight.
Can we order blazer buttons with our brand logo?
Yes. Logos can be embossed or debossed on metal buttons, laser engraved on polyester, corozo or wood, or applied as enamel accents. A vector file and size info are needed. Samples are made before production to approve detail, tone and feel.
