Metal buttons for clothing: strength and character
Metal buttons give a garment a sense of quality and weight that is hard to achieve with any other material. They are essential on denim and workwear, a classic on blazers and nautical styles, and a favourite accent for outerwear designers. Polkom manufactures and supplies wholesale metal buttons for brands, garment factories and ateliers across Europe, from standard stock models to buttons with a relief logo made to your design.
Materials for metal buttons
The choice of metal determines the weight, the level of relief detail and the price of the button:
- Brass: a classic material with good corrosion resistance; suitable for stamped buttons and premium items.
- Zinc alloy: die-cast, which allows deep, detailed relief, complex shapes and solid models.
- Aluminium: a light metal, practical for large sizes and items where weight matters.
- Steel: for parts under heavy load, such as some types of jeans buttons.
Types of metal buttons
- Shank buttons for jackets, blazers and coats.
- Sew-through buttons: metal models sewn on like a regular button.
- Jeans buttons, attached with a rivet and a press, without sewing.
- Combined models: metal with enamel, a polyester insert or a rim.
- Fabric-covered buttons with a metal base covered in fabric or leather.
For no-sew fastening on jackets, childrenswear and workwear, see also our snap buttons.
Metal button finishes and colours
The surface defines a button's style as much as its shape. We offer:
- nickel, black nickel and gunmetal;
- gold, light gold and antique brass;
- antique silver, bronze and copper;
- oxidised and patinated finishes with a worn look;
- matte, gloss or satin finish;
- coloured enamel and lacquer to fill the relief.
Metal buttons withstand repeated washing and dry cleaning and keep their shape under heavy use. The quality of the electroplating is decisive for durability, so for custom orders we always make a sample for checking.
Custom metal buttons with your logo
For brands, the metal button is one of the best places for a logo. We can produce:
- a raised or recessed logo, cast or stamped into the button;
- laser engraving on a finished button;
- lettering around the edge and a decorative rim;
- enamel fill in your brand colours.

Why Polkom
We have worked in garment trims for more than three decades, keep large stock and make samples quickly. We deliver across the EU at competitive wholesale prices and, if needed, also attach the buttons for you. See our services.
How to choose the right metal button
When choosing, consider the fabric weight and where the button will sit. Heavy, solid zinc alloy models look great on coats and thick jackets but can drag on fine fabrics. Lighter stamped brass buttons are better suited to shirts and light jackets. Match the finish to the rest of the garment's metal hardware, such as zips, eyelets and buckles, so the item looks consistent.
How to order
Send us the size, material, finish and your logo in vector format. We prepare a proposal and a sample, and after approval the production run. Minimum quantities depend on the item, so send an enquiry.
