Snap buttons: reliable fastening without sewing

Snap buttons (also called press studs or press fasteners) are among the most widely used fastenings in textiles. They are not sewn on but attached with a press and special dies, which makes them quick to apply in mass production and very strong in use. How a snap button is built

Each snap button has four parts, two for the top and two for the underside of the item:

• cap: the visible face, which carries the design and logo;
• socket (female part): the spring element that receives the stud;
• stud (male part): the projection that snaps into the socket;
• post: the bottom part that fixes the stud to the fabric.

The parts are joined through the fabric with a press. Choosing the right post length for the fabric thickness ensures the button will not tear out and will close with a clear click thousands of times.
