Wholesale Invisible Zips

Invisible (concealed) zips direct from the manufacturer for dresses, skirts, formalwear and cushions – fine, flexible and in a wide palette for a clean seam with no visible teeth.

What are invisible zips?

Invisible zips, also known as concealed zips, are coil zips with a reversed construction: the chain sits on the inner side of the tape and, once sewn in, disappears completely into the seam. Only the slim slider puller remains visible on the outside, usually teardrop-shaped. This keeps the garment's line clean, with no technical details disturbing the design. Polkom supplies invisible zips wholesale to garment factories, brands and ateliers across Europe.

Where they are used

  • evening and formal dresses, bridalwear;
  • skirts, side-zip trousers, blouses and jackets;
  • garments in fine fabrics – silk, chiffon, satin, organza, jersey;
  • decorative cushion and seat covers;
  • designer pieces where no visible detail should distract the eye.

Characteristics

Invisible zips have a nylon coil, most often in size No. 3, less often No. 2 or No. 5. The fine chain and soft tape make them light and flexible – the zip follows the shape of the body and does not create a stiff edge along the seam. They are usually closed-end, as they are inserted into side and back seams. Standard lengths start at around 18 cm for skirts and trousers and go up to 60 cm and more for long dresses.

Unlike a standard nylon coil zip, the tape of an invisible zip is sewn almost right up to the teeth, so both the correct length and the tape colour matter – if the colour is not well matched, the tape may show when the wearer moves.

Insertion

An invisible zip is sewn in with a special invisible zip foot that uncurls the coil and lets the stitching run as close to it as possible. The zip is inserted before the rest of the seam is closed. It is advisable for the zip to be slightly longer than the opening, with the excess left below the seam, so the slider runs easily to the end. On fine and stretch fabrics, it is wise to reinforce the zip area with stabilising tape.

Colours and selection

Since only the slider and possibly the edge of the tape are visible, the colour should match the fabric as closely as possible. We offer a wide palette and match shades to a physical swatch or a Pantone reference. Slider pullers can be tape-coloured, metal or decorative. If the garment has buttons or other visible metal accessories, we can coordinate colours within one order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which presser foot is used to sew in an invisible zip?
An invisible zip is sewn with a special invisible zip foot. It has two grooves that uncurl the coil and let the needle pass as close to it as possible. A standard zip foot can also be used, but the result is harder to achieve and the zip may remain partly visible.
What length of invisible zip do I need for a dress?
Dresses with a back seam usually take invisible zips between 40 and 60 cm long, while skirts and trousers need around 18 to 22 cm. The zip should be slightly longer than the opening so the slider can pass freely. For non-standard styles, send us the measurements and we will recommend a suitable length.
Are invisible zips suitable for thin fabrics such as silk?
Yes, invisible zips have a fine nylon coil and soft tape, so they suit silk, chiffon, satin and organza. For very thin or stretch fabrics we recommend reinforcing the zip area with fusible tape so the fabric does not pucker and the seam stays smooth.
