To order knitted elastic wholesale, prepare a short specification: width in millimetres, type of elastic (plain, picot edge, plush back, with logo), composition, desired tension, Pantone colour and approximate quantity. The manufacturer proposes a suitable article, sends a sample for approval and then starts the production run. The more precise the specification, the faster and more accurate the quote.
Who orders knitted elastic wholesale
Knitted elastic is a consumable that goes into every item in the collection, so it is bought on rolls and in large quantities. Typical customers are:
- manufacturers of lingerie, pyjamas and loungewear;
- sportswear and children's clothing brands;
- garment factories working on CMT contracts for other brands;
- ateliers and haberdashery traders.
Knitted elastic wholesale – specification parameters
| Parameter | What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Width | In mm, with permitted tolerance | Determines the fit in the channel or along the edge |
| Type | Plain, picot, plush back, buttonhole, with logo | Determines the production technology |
| Composition | Polyamide / polyester / cotton and elastane or rubber | Affects softness, washing and the garment label |
| Tension and elongation | A sample for comparison or a description of the use | Responsible for the fit of the garment |
| Colour | Pantone code or a physical fabric sample | Match with the collection |
| Quantity | Approximate, by colour and width | Determines the possible options and the price |
| Packaging | Rolls, spools, specific labelling | Makes work in the factory easier |
| Garment and care | What the elastic is for and how it will be washed | Helps choose the right article |
If you do not have all the data, send a photo of the garment and a sample of your current elastic – this is often the fastest route to the right proposal. You will find an overview of the types in our elastics section.
Stock article or custom production
The first decision when ordering wholesale is whether to use elastic from the available range or to order a custom development. Stock articles in standard colours – white, black and the most popular shades – are suitable for basic styles and allow faster delivery and smaller quantities. Custom production is justified when the collection requires a specific colour, a non-standard width, a particular tension or an elastic with a woven-in logo. In this case, lead times and minimum quantities are agreed individually for each article, so it is best to send the inquiry while the collection is still being developed, not just before sewing.
Pantone colour
In lingerie and sportswear, the elastic almost always has to match the fabric. Knitted elastic is dyed to a Pantone textile code (TCX or TPX) or to a physical fabric sample. Tips for an accurate match:
- send a physical fabric sample, not just a code – dyed fabric rarely matches the code perfectly;
- compare the shade in daylight or under a standard light source;
- bear in mind that the elastic is made of different yarns and may look slightly lighter or darker than the fabric;
- when reordering, quote the approved sample so that the shade is maintained.
Samples and approval
The ordering process usually goes through the following steps:
- Inquiry – you send the specification, photos and samples.
- Proposal – the manufacturer proposes an article from the available range or a custom development.
- Sample – you receive elastic for trial sewing and colour checking.
- Tests – you sew a sample garment, wash it and check the fit.
- Approval – you confirm the sample in writing so that the standard for the run is clear.
- Series production and delivery.
Which tests to carry out
You do not need a laboratory to detect most problems. Simple checks in the factory provide enough certainty:
- Elongation test – stretch 10 cm of elastic to the maximum and measure the length.
- Recovery test – stretch repeatedly and check whether the elastic returns to its original length.
- Wash test – wash a sewn sample at least several times at the temperature on the label.
- Colour fastness – check whether the elastic bleeds colour onto light fabric in the wash. For a formal assessment, the methods of the ISO 105 series of standards are used.
- Sewing test – check that the needle does not cut the elastic at the machine's production speed.
What determines the price of knitted elastic
The price is calculated individually, so always ask for a specific quote. The main factors are:
- the width and density of the elastic;
- the raw materials – polyamide or polyester, elastane or rubber;
- the type – picot edge, plush back and jacquard logo require additional operations;
- the colour – a standard colour from stock or dyeing to Pantone;
- the quantity by colour and width;
- the packaging and specific labelling of the rolls.
For a specific price, send a request for a quote with the data from the table above.
Common mistakes when ordering wholesale
- Ordering by width only, without a tension sample – the new elastic holds differently from the old one.
- No sample approved in writing – there is no clear standard for the run.
- Ordering the colour without a fabric sample – the shade does not match.
- Unspecified composition – the garment label is incomplete or wrong.
- Skipping the wash test – loss of stretch is discovered only by the customer.
