Horn buttons with a logo are most often made by laser engraving: the beam vaporises a thin layer of the horn surface and leaves a precise mark in a lighter or more matte tone. This produces a discreet and durable logo, monogram or inscription that does not wear off with wear and washing. Buttons with a flat or slightly recessed face are suitable, and the logo must be simplified in relation to the size of the button.
Why brands engrave horn buttons
A horn button is already a mark of quality in itself. When the brand’s logo appears on it, it becomes a signature – a detail the customer notices every time they fasten the garment and which is hard to copy. Bespoke tailoring ateliers engrave the client’s monogram, outerwear brands their symbol, and corporate clients the company mark on jackets for representative uniforms.
What the engraving looks like on horn
Horn is a natural keratin material with an irregular pattern. Laser engraving removes the polished surface layer and reveals material underneath with a slightly lighter, matte tone. The result depends on the button:
- Dark, almost black horn – the most contrasting engraving; the logo stands out clearly.
- Marbled horn – the engraving passes through light and dark areas and looks more natural but less uniform.
- Light horn – a tonal, delicate mark, visible mainly when the light falls at an angle.
- Polished button – the matte engraving contrasts with the shine.
- Matte button – the engraving is more discreet and tonal.
Because every button is different, the engravings in one batch also show slight differences in contrast. This is part of the natural character of the material.
Suitable sizes for a logo
| Button size | Approx. diameter | What can be engraved |
|---|---|---|
| 16L–20L | 10–12.7 mm | Initial, small symbol |
| 24L–28L | 15–18 mm | Monogram, symbol, short name |
| 32L–36L | 20–23 mm | Logo with name, inscription in a circle |
| 40L and above | 25 mm and above | Full logo, inscription and symbol |
The table is a guide – on four-hole buttons there is less free space, so the logo is often placed in a circle around the holes or along the rim.
Logo position
- In the centre – on buttons with a shank at the back, where the face is completely free.
- Around the edge – an inscription in a circle around the four holes; a classic solution for jackets and coats.
- Between the holes – a small symbol or initial, if the spacing allows.
- On the back – a hidden logo, visible only from the inside; a discreet mark of authenticity.
Preparing the file
- Send the logo in vector format – AI, EPS, SVG or PDF.
- If the logo has thin lines and small text, prepare a simplified version for the small buttons.
- State the desired position and size of the engraving relative to the button.
- Specify whether all buttons will be engraved or only those on the front.
We will review the file and, if necessary, suggest corrections so that the engraving is legible on natural horn.
Laser or mechanical engraving?
Laser is the main method for horn, because it is precise, requires no tooling and does not put mechanical stress on the material. Mechanical engraving with a milling cutter gives a deeper relief, but with natural horn, with its layers and irregular density, the result is harder to control. That is why laser is the preferred choice for most brands. You will find more about the techniques in the engraved buttons category.
Durability of the engraving
Laser engraving is part of the material itself, not an applied coating, so it does not wear off with wear and dry cleaning. Over time the polished surface around it may become slightly matte from use, which even emphasises the natural look. If the engraving is filled with paint for stronger contrast, bear in mind that the paint may gradually fade with intensive washing.
Horn or imitation for logo buttons?
For large runs where it is important that all buttons and engravings look completely identical, polyester imitation horn (faux horn) buttons are more suitable. Natural horn with a logo is the solution for collections where the authenticity and uniqueness of every button are part of the product’s value.
What affects the price
The price depends on the size and type of horn button, the surface, the complexity and area of the engraving, the number of engraved buttons in the set and the total quantity. For an exact quotation, send an inquiry with the logo and the order parameters.
Monograms for bespoke tailoring
For ateliers that make bespoke suits and coats, an engraved monogram is a high value-added service. The client’s initials on the horn buttons turn the garment into a personal item. With such orders the quantities are small and every set is different, so a laser, which needs no tooling, is particularly convenient. It is important that the atelier provides clearly written initials, the font and their arrangement – for example in a line, one above the other or in a circle.
