Perfume caps are classified by two features: construction – push-on over the pump or screw-on – and material – metal, polyester or a combination of both. Metal gives weight and a cool, luxurious touch; polyester offers unlimited colour and effects such as marble; and a combined cap brings together the advantages of both. The right choice depends on the bottle, the brand’s positioning and the character of the fragrance.
The role of the perfume cap
The cap is not just the finishing touch on the bottle. It protects the pump from dust and accidental pressing, guards the mechanism in transit and is often the most memorable element of the design. Customers take it off and put it back every time they use the fragrance, so the weight, the touch and the sound on closing shape the impression of quality far more than we tend to think.
For a brand, the cap is also a carrier of identity. A recognisable shape or colour lets the product be identified on the shelf without even reading the name. That is why for new lines the cap is designed together with the bottle rather than picked from available models at the end.
Types of perfume caps by construction
Push-on caps over the pump
The most common type for spray perfumes. The pump is crimped onto the neck of the bottle, and the cap is pushed on top, covering the whole mechanism. It is held by an inner insert that grips the metal ferrule of the pump or the shoulder of the bottle. A well-made cap of this type goes on with slight resistance, does not spin freely and does not press the pump actuator.
Screw caps
These are used on bottles with a threaded neck – perfume oils, refill bottles, some cosmetic products and home fragrances. Here the cap screws directly onto the neck or onto a screw-on pump. The advantage is a more secure closure; the drawback is slower opening and the need for an exact thread match.
Decorative and sculptural caps
For niche and limited-edition fragrances, the cap is often larger than usual and works as a small sculpture – a sphere, a faceted crystal, a geometric body or a shape inspired by the story of the fragrance. Structurally it is also push-on or screw-on, but visually it dominates the bottle and calls for careful judgement of weight and balance.
Materials for perfume caps
Metal caps
Metal perfume caps are most often made of zinc alloy or aluminium. Zinc alloy is cast in a mould, which allows complex relief, facets and a sharply defined logo, and the finished cap is noticeably heavy. Aluminium is much lighter and suits clean cylindrical shapes with a brushed or satin surface. With both materials, the final look is defined by the finish: gold, rose gold, silver, nickel colour, gunmetal, black or antique, in gloss, matte or satin.
All Polkom metal products are nickel free. When we speak of a “nickel” or “black nickel” colour, it refers only to the visual shade of the finish, not to the metal’s content.
Polyester caps
Polyester caps are cast from polyester resin coloured throughout. This means the colour is the same through the whole thickness and does not wear off with use. Polyester allows any Pantone colour – solid, mixed, with a marble, horn or stone effect, matte or glossy. The cap is lighter than a metal one, with a warm, pleasant touch, and is an excellent choice when the cap colour needs to “speak” for the fragrance.
Combined caps
A combined cap pairs a polyester body with a metal detail – a ring at the base, a metal logo plate on the top or a decorative element on the side. The reverse is also possible: a metal cap with a coloured enamel logo. This option gives colour and character while keeping the “jewellery” accent that customers associate with a higher class.
The insert – the invisible part
Whatever the material, almost every push-on cap has an inner insert, usually made of plastic. It takes care of the fit to the pump, while the outer body – metal or polyester – is responsible for the look. Thanks to the insert, the same outer shape can be adapted to different bottles.
Comparison of materials
| Criterion | Metal | Polyester | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight and feel | Heavy (zinc alloy) or light (aluminium), cool touch | Light, warm touch | Medium, depends on the share of metal |
| Colours | Any metal colour and finish | Any Pantone colour, marble, horn, transparent effects | Pantone colour plus a metal accent |
| Logo | Engraving, relief, debossed logo, enamel | Moulded raised or debossed logo, print, colour fill | Usually on the metal detail |
| Suitable for | Classic and luxury fragrances, men’s lines | Colourful, modern and niche lines, ranges with several fragrances | Brands that want both colour and a luxury detail |
Cap shapes
The shape is determined by the bottle and the brand’s style. The most common options are:
- cylinder – classic, with a flat, rounded or bevelled top;
- cube and cuboid – with sharp or rounded edges, suited to square bottles;
- sphere and oval – soft shapes that sit well on low bottles;
- faceted shapes – resemble cut crystal and catch the light;
- custom shape – to your drawing, 3D model or sample.
At Polkom, caps are made in any size and shape, so you do not have to work within a standard catalogue.
How to choose the material
- If the product is positioned as luxury – metal in gold, antique or gunmetal with a relief logo.
- If the line has several fragrances – one shape in polyester, with its own Pantone colour for each fragrance.
- If the bottle is small or narrow – a lighter cap, so as not to upset the balance.
- If you want a unique look – polyester with a marble effect, where every cap has a different pattern.
- If you are looking for a compromise – a combined cap with a polyester body and a metal ring.
