Types of Buckles – by Material, Mechanism and Purpose

Types of buckles are divided by three criteria: fastening mechanism (prong, slide, side-release, automatic, double-ring), material (metal, polyester, engineering plastic) and purpose (belt, coat, bag, backpack, shoe). The right choice starts with the mechanism, because it determines whether the belt has holes, how often it will be adjusted and what load it takes. Material and finish come after that.

Types of buckles by mechanism

The mechanism is the most important technical decision. It determines how the strap will be sewn, whether you will punch holes and how quickly the end user will fasten and unfasten the product.

Prong buckle

The classic construction: a frame, a bar and a movable prong that passes through a hole in the belt. It is the standard for leather belts, shoe straps and watch straps. The advantage is precise fixing of the length; the drawback is that holes are needed, and they wear the material over time. The version with a roller on the front of the frame reduces friction on the belt.

Slide buckle (without a prong)

The strap is passed through the frame and held by friction or by a centre bar. It is used on belts for coats, trench coats and dresses, where the belt is tied or simply held. There are no holes, so it is suitable for wool, cotton and synthetic belts that should not be punched.

Side-release buckle

A two-part fastener – a male part with sprung arms and a female part with windows. It fastens with a click and releases by squeezing both sides. This is the typical buckle for backpacks, sports bags, collars and children's products.

Adjuster (tri-glide slider)

It does not fasten but adjusts the length of a shoulder strap or strap. The webbing is threaded through the three bars and is locked by its own tension. It almost always works in combination with a side-release buckle or a ring.

Automatic buckle

It grips the belt with a toothed jaw or an internal track, without holes. It allows adjustment to the centimetre. It is found on men's leather belts and on tactical belts made of dense webbing.

Double-ring buckle

Two D-shaped or round rings through which the strap is passed and turned back. This simple construction is popular on webbing belts, denim accessories and sportswear.

Types of buckles by material

Metal models are covered in detail in the metal buckles category. Polyester and engineering plastic buckles are in the main buckles category.

Types of buckles by purpose

  • For coat and dress belts – slide buckles, often polyester, in the colour of the buttons; widths of about 2–6 cm.
  • For leather belts – prong, roller or automatic, metal; the width follows the belt.
  • For bags – buckles with a movable bar, adjusters, decorative frames for the flap.
  • For backpacks and sports products – side-release buckles and adjusters in engineering plastic.
  • For shoes and sandals – small prong buckles for narrow straps.
  • For dungarees and workwear – special hook buckles that engage a button.

Shapes and look

Besides the mechanism, a buckle is also chosen by shape: rectangular, square, oval, round, with a curved profile or figurative. Rectangular buckles look stricter and more businesslike, round and oval ones softer and more fashionable. A double buckle (two parallel prongs or two frames) is used on wider belts and gives a pronounced, vintage character. With polyester models there is also a choice of surface – gloss, matt, horn effect, marble or mother-of-pearl.

In collections where the buckle is the main visual accent, it is worth thinking about it at the sketch stage. The size of the frame relative to the belt width, the thickness of the profile and the colour of the finish change the proportions of the whole product. A narrow frame on a wide belt looks simple and contemporary, while a heavy frame on a narrow belt looks decorative and more retro.

How to choose the type of buckle for your product

  1. Determine the width of the strap or belt in millimetres – the inner opening of the buckle must accommodate it freely.
  2. Choose the mechanism according to use: daily adjustment, one-off fastening or a purely decorative function.
  3. Check the thickness of the material. A double wool belt or thick leather requires a taller opening.
  4. Take the load into account. For backpacks and work belts choose engineering plastics or steel; for fashion products alloy or polyester.
  5. Coordinate the look with the rest of the hardware – buttons, rings, eyelets and logo plates.
  6. Ask for a sample and test it with the real material before starting a run.

Common mistakes when choosing

  • Measuring the outer size of the buckle instead of the inner opening.
  • A heavy metal buckle on a light cotton belt – the weight turns it over and the belt twists.
  • A side-release buckle with a width different from the webbing – the webbing bunches or slips out.
  • A finish that does not match the zip and eyelets of the same product.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a buckle?
A buckle is a fastener for a belt, strap or shoulder strap. It consists of a frame through which the strap passes and an element that secures it – a prong, a bar, a snap mechanism or a toothed jaw. In Bulgarian the words "katarama" and "toka" are used as synonyms, with "toka" more often meaning a decorative belt buckle.
Which buckle is the strongest?
Steel buckles and heavy zinc alloy models with a thick bar and prong take the greatest load. On backpacks and technical straps strength is achieved with polyacetal or polyamide, which withstand impacts and repeated fastening. The choice depends on the load, not just the material.
What is the difference between a prong buckle and a slide buckle?
A prong buckle secures the belt through holes and allows precise, stepped adjustment. A slide buckle has no prong – the strap is passed through the frame and held by friction or tied. It is suitable for coat and dress belts that should not be punched, and for soft fabric belts.
