Metal Buckles for Belts, Bags and Footwear

Metal buckles in zinc alloy, steel and brass for leather and textile belts, bags, footwear and straps – standard models or with your logo, direct from the manufacturer.

Metal buckles – strength and character

Metal buckles are the buckles that bear the greatest load: on a leather belt, a bag strap or a shoe strap. Metal gives them strength, weight and a visual presence that plastic cannot achieve. That is why the metal buckle is often the most recognisable detail of a belt or bag. Polkom, a manufacturer and wholesaler of garment accessories, offers metal buckles wholesale and made to order for makers of belts, small leather goods, footwear, clothing and accessories. For polyester and plastic buckles for coats, dresses and backpacks, see the Buckles category.

Types of metal buckles

  • Prong (pin) buckles – the classic buckle for a belt with holes; the prong passes through the hole and sets the length.
  • Plate buckles – a solid face plate with a hook on the back; suitable for logos and decorative relief.
  • Automatic buckles – grip the belt without holes using a toothed clamp mechanism.
  • Bag and strap buckles – adjusters, sliders and buckles with a moving bar.
  • Shoe buckles – small, light models for sandal and shoe straps.
  • Coat belt buckles – decorative metal buckles for trench coat and jacket belts.

Materials

Zinc alloy (zamak) is the most widely used material because it allows complex shapes, relief and logos to be cast with high precision. Steel buckles are thinner and extremely strong, so they are preferred for work belts and technical straps. Brass is heavy, does not rust and develops a fine patina over time – a typical choice for high-end leather belts.

Widths and sizes

The buckle is chosen according to the width of the belt or strap. The most common widths are around 20 and 25 mm for women's belts and bags, 30–35 mm for classic men's belts and 38–40 mm for jeans and casual belts. For bags, the size depends on the strap width. The height of the opening also matters and must suit the thickness of the leather.

Finishes

We offer polished and matt nickel, gold, antique brass, antique silver, gunmetal, black, as well as brushed and aged surfaces. Fashion collections also use combinations with enamel. Choose the finish together with the rings and metal logo plates on the product so the hardware looks unified.

Custom metal buckles with your logo

We produce metal buckles to your design – with an embossed, debossed or engraved logo, a specific profile and finish. First we prepare a technical drawing and a sample for you to check with your belt or strap, and once approved, production begins. Find out more about samples and engraving on our Services page.

Strength and durability

For metal belt buckles, the prong and bar must be thick enough not to bend with daily fastening. Edges that come into contact with leather should be smooth so they do not wear it. A quality finish keeps its colour with friction and contact with moisture. That is why we recommend testing the sample on a real belt before the production order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What width of metal buckle do I need?
The inner width of the buckle should equal the width of the belt or strap. Women's belts and bags most often use 20–25 mm, classic men's belts 30–35 mm, and jeans belts around 38–40 mm. Also consider the leather thickness to choose a suitable opening height.
Which material is best for a metal buckle?
Zinc alloy is the most flexible for design and logos and suits most fashion belts and bags. Steel is thinner and strong and is used for work belts and technical straps. Brass is heavy, does not rust and develops a patina, so it is preferred for high-end leather goods.
Do you make metal buckles with a logo?
Yes. We produce buckles to your design with an embossed, debossed or engraved logo, a specific profile and your chosen finish. We need a vector file of the logo, the belt width and the preferred buckle type. Before production you receive a sample to check with your belt.
Are metal buckles suitable for coats?
Yes, especially on trench coats and jackets where you want a stronger fashion accent. However, if you are looking for a buckle in the colour of the fabric or the coat buttons, polyester buckles from the Buckles category are more suitable. They are lighter and can be colour-matched to a fabric sample.
