The trouser hook and bar is the small metal detail that keeps the waistband closed above the zip and holds the line of the front. On women's and men's trousers it is almost invisible from the outside, yet it is seen every time the garment is put on – which is why brands increasingly choose it in the same colour as their other metal accessories. Polkom is a manufacturer of metal trouser hooks and bars and offers two complete sets – a classic hook and bar and a hook and bar with a triangular opening – in nickel and matt nickel colour (nickel free), gold, matt gold, gunmetal and black.
In this article you will find what makes the two models different, how to match the colour to the fabric and the other accessories, and what to specify before ordering hooks and bars for women's and men's trousers. The general types (sew-on, press-on, large-plate, double, adjustable) are covered in the article trouser hooks and bars – types and how to choose.
What the hook and bar set contains
Both models are supplied as a set of four parts: a hook, a bar and two backing plates. The hook goes on the top end of the waistband, the bar on the waistband extension, and the backing plates sit on the inside and hold the two main parts to the fabric. When all parts are from the same model and in the same finish, the closure is precise and the colour is identical inside and out.
If you are working with this accessory for the first time, start with the article what hooks and bars are and what they are used for.

The two trouser hook and bar models
Classic hook and bar
The classic model has a hook with a rounded end and a rectangular bar plate with two rectangular openings. The shape is calm and versatile – it is the choice that suits almost any pair of trousers: men's suit trousers, women's classic trousers, chinos or uniform trousers. When you want the hook and bar not to attract attention but simply to work, the classic set is a safe choice.
Hook and bar with a triangular opening
The second model has a bar plate with a triangular opening into which the hook engages. The shape is more graphic and slightly more modern, so it is often chosen for women's trousers, high-waisted styles and collections in which the inside details are also part of the look. In gold and matt gold, the triangular opening looks almost like a small piece of jewellery.

Six colours of hooks and bars – how to choose
All Polkom metal hooks and bars are nickel free – "nickel" and "matt nickel" describe only the colour of the finish, not nickel content. This is how the individual colours work:
- Nickel colour – a light, shiny silver tone. Suits grey, blue and light fabrics and silver-coloured zips.
- Matt nickel colour – the same silver tone without shine. It looks more discreet and works well on wool suit trousers.
- Gold – a warm, rich colour for styles with visible gold accessories, for example gold buttons or a gold buckle.
- Matt gold – a softer golden tone that looks good on beige, camel, olive and cream.
- Gunmetal – a dark graphite tone for black, anthracite and navy fabrics. Read more in the article what gunmetal colour is.
- Black – almost invisible on dark fabrics and well suited to minimalist collections.

A good rule is for the hook and bar to repeat the colour of the zip and of the metal button on the waistband extension. How to find a common tone for the metal details is explained in the article how to choose the colour of a metal button.
Hook and bar for men's trousers
On men's trousers the waistband takes a lot of strain when sitting and moving, so the hook and bar must be stable and well placed. The classic model is the traditional choice for suit trousers, and the colour usually follows the fabric: matt nickel or nickel colour for grey and blue, gunmetal or black for dark wool fabrics. On formal styles the hook and bar is often combined with an inside button on the extension – the two options are compared in the article hook and bar or button for the trouser waistband.
For chinos and casual men's trousers you can also choose gold or matt gold if the style has visible brass or golden details.
Hook and bar for women's trousers
Women's trousers allow more freedom. High-waisted styles, wide-leg trousers and suit sets often have a clean front without a visible button, so the hook and bar remains the only waistband closure. Here the triangular-opening model is a good fit, because it adds a detail that is noticed when dressing. Gold and matt gold work particularly well in women's collections in warm tones, while black and gunmetal suit black and dark suits.

The same sets can also be used on skirts – where exactly the hook and bar goes on a skirt is explained in the article hook and bar for skirts.
Size, attachment and checks before production
The size of the hook and bar is chosen according to the width of the waistband and the thickness of the fabric. How to measure the waistband is described in the article hook and bar sizes. Before series production, it is worth attaching the hook and bar to a sample in the same fabric and checking:
- that the hook slides in and out of the bar easily without the waistband puckering;
- that the backing plates sit tightly on the inside;
- that the colour matches the zip, the button and the other metal accessories;
- that the hook and bar sits at the same distance from the edge on every garment.
Practical attachment tips are in the articles how to sew on a hook and bar and how to attach a press-on hook and bar, and the most common problems are collected in mistakes when attaching hooks and bars.
