Bone buttons: a natural material with character
Bone buttons are among the oldest fastenings in the history of clothing, and today they are once again in demand from brands that want a natural material with a dense, solid look. Polkom offers wholesale bone buttons for clothing manufacturers, ateliers and distributors, as well as custom production with an engraved logo, a specific colour or your own design. Bone is denser and heavier than most natural materials, so the button sits securely on the garment and handles frequent buttoning with ease.
Properties of bone buttons
The natural colour of bone ranges from ivory to a warm ecru. Every button has a slightly different structure, which gives the finished item authenticity. The material machines well, polishes to a soft sheen and takes dye.
- high density and a pleasant weight in the hand;
- a hard surface that holds up in normal use;
- natural texture: no two buttons are exactly alike;
- withstands washing and dry cleaning when the care instructions are followed;
- can be left in its natural tone or dyed to the shade you want.
An easy test for genuine bone is the sound: tapped lightly against glass, it rings almost like porcelain, while plastic imitations sound dull.
Sizes, shapes and finishes
Button size is given in lignes (L), where 1L = 0.635 mm. A rough guide by garment type:
- 16L–20L (about 10–13 mm): shirts, blouses, cuffs;
- 24L–28L (about 15–18 mm): jackets, waistcoats, dresses;
- 32L–40L (about 20–25 mm): coats, trench coats and outerwear.
Models are available with two or four holes, as well as with a shank. The surface can be polished, matte or with an aged effect. Buttons with an engraved motif whose grooves are filled with colour are especially striking, as are scorched models with a vintage feel: the heat treatment leaves shades that are hard to achieve with any other material.
Which garments they suit
Bone buttons pair best with natural-fibre fabrics such as wool, linen, cotton and tweed. They are used for:
- coats, trench coats and jackets;
- classic and sports jackets and suits;
- knitted cardigans and jumpers;
- shirts and dresses in retro or casual style;
- bags, accessories and handmade items.

Custom bone buttons with your logo
Bone is an excellent material for laser engraving. A logo, lettering or ornament can be applied to the button, and combining engraving with colour-filled grooves creates a contrasting, easily recognisable brand mark. We produce batches to your design, agreeing shape, size, shade and details in advance. Find out more about personalisation in engraved buttons.
