Sewing Threads for Garment Making Wholesale

Core-spun, polyester, textured and elastic sewing threads for clothing and home textiles from the manufacturer – from fine shirts to workwear, with wide colour cards.

Sewing threads for garment production

Sewing threads are the most used consumable in every sewing factory. A good thread runs evenly through the needle at high speed, does not form loops or knots, does not pucker the seam and withstands washing, ironing and wear. Polkom supplies sewing threads wholesale to manufacturers of clothing, home textiles, workwear and lingerie, and helps choose the right construction and thickness for each fabric and each operation.

Types of sewing threads

Polyester/polyester core-spun threads

A core of high-tenacity polyester filament wrapped in staple polyester fibres. The core provides strength and the wrap gives a soft, natural look and good machine performance. Available in thicknesses from about 14 to 150 tex and on colour cards with up to 480 shades. This is the versatile choice for shirts, suits, dresses, swimwear, sportswear, workwear and denim.

Spun polyester threads

Spun from high-tenacity polyester fibres, with a natural look and moderate hairiness. The range is from about 18 to 80 tex, and the colour cards usually include about 300 colours. Suitable for garment making, lingerie, home textiles and as a looper or bobbin thread on overlock and lockstitch machines.

Continuous filament polyester threads

Filament threads are very strong and smooth, so they allow a finer thread at the same strength. The most used thicknesses are between ticket 30 (about 80 tex) and ticket 120 (about 24 tex). They are used for jackets, trousers, suits, bags and decorative seams.

Smooth threads without surface fibres

In these threads the polyester core is covered with polyester using a special technology, so there is no fuzz on the surface. The seam is glossier and cleaner, without lint, and the thread is free of knots and uneven sections – suitable for visible seams on fine fabrics and leather.

Textured and microfibre threads

Bulky, soft and elastic threads with low shrinkage for overlock, coverstitch and bobbin thread. The microfibre versions are especially soft to the touch and are used for lingerie, swimwear and sportswear where the seam touches the skin.

Elastic threads for stretch seams

Filament polyester threads with high stretch for neckline, sleeve and crotch seams. In coverstitch they give up to twice the elasticity, and when used as both needle and bobbin thread the seam follows the stretch of the fabric without breaking.

Multicolour sewing threads

Threads coloured by injection dyeing in up to four colours – from soft blending tones to contrasting rainbow effects for decorative seams.

Thickness and needle choice

  • Ticket 150–180 – fine fabrics, lingerie, light blouses.
  • Ticket 120 – the standard for shirts, dresses and most garments.
  • Ticket 75–80 – trousers, jackets, heavier fabrics.
  • Ticket 20–40 – decorative and heavily loaded seams, denim, workwear.

The thread thickness must match the needle size. A thread that is too thick in a thin needle frays and breaks, while one that is too thin in a thick needle gives a loose, uneven seam.

Prewound bobbins and bobbin thread

For sewing and quilting machines we offer prewound bobbins in standard sizes. Precise winding keeps constant tension from start to finish, the length difference between bobbins is about 1%, and the machine does not stop for rewinding. This reduces waste and changeover time.

Applications

  • shirts, dresses, suits, trousers and outerwear;
  • lingerie, swimwear and sportswear;
  • workwear and uniforms;
  • bed linen, curtains and home textiles.

For seams on natural fabrics see the cotton threads, and for jeans the special denim threads.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between core-spun and ordinary polyester thread?
Core-spun thread has a core of continuous polyester filament wrapped in fibres. The core ensures high strength, while the wrap gives a natural look and protects the thread from heating in the needle. Ordinary spun polyester thread is more economical and very suitable for standard seams, but it is less strong at the same thickness.
Which thread should I use for overlock and coverstitch machines?
Core-spun or spun polyester in ticket 120 is usually used in the needles. Textured or microfibre threads, which are bulky, soft and elastic, are suitable for the loopers. They cover the edge well, do not tighten the knit and feel pleasant against the skin – important for lingerie, swimwear and sportswear.
Which thread is suitable for swimwear and sportswear?
In swimwear and sportswear the seam must stretch together with the fabric. We recommend elastic filament polyester threads or textured threads for overlock and coverstitch. They withstand chlorine, sweat and frequent washing, and used as both needle and bobbin thread they give the seam maximum elasticity.
Do you offer prewound bobbins?
Yes. We offer prewound bobbins in standard sizes for sewing, embroidery and quilting machines. They keep constant tension, have almost identical length and save winding time. Send us the machine model or the bobbin size and the colour so we can offer the right option.
