Threads for footwear and leather – strength in dense materials
Threads for footwear and leather must withstand conditions in which ordinary sewing thread wears out quickly. Leather is dense and stiff, shoe seams flex with every step, and bags and belts are under constant tension. That is why these threads are thicker, with higher breaking strength and often a special coating. Polkom, a manufacturer and wholesaler of garment accessories, supplies footwear and leather threads wholesale to shoe factories, leather workshops, bag manufacturers and ateliers.
Types of footwear and leather thread
Bonded polyamide threads
The filaments are bound with a coating that prevents fraying, reduces needle friction and allows high-speed sewing through thick leather. This is the most widely used thread in footwear production and leather goods.
Bonded polyester threads
Similar strength, but better UV resistance and less stretch. Suitable for products worn outdoors and for visible decorative seams.
Waxed and flat threads
Used for hand-stitching leather – belts, wallets, cases and accessories. The wax coating makes sewing easier and protects the seam from moisture.
Heavy decorative threads
Bold stitching on shoe uppers, bags and belts, often in a contrasting colour.
Characteristics to look for
- high breaking strength and tensile resistance;
- resistance to abrasion and flexing;
- minimal fraying when sewing thick materials;
- moisture resistance and stable colour;
- even thickness for a neat, regular seam.
Thickness and needle
With leather, the thread thickness must suit both the material and the needle. Special leather needles with a cutting point are used to make a clean hole. Finer threads are used for thin leathers and gloves, medium ones for shoes and bags, and heavy ones for belts, saddlery and heavy products. We will advise you on the right combination for your machines.
Applications
- footwear – uppers, sole attaching and decorative stitching;
- bags, backpacks and wallets;
- belts, straps and leather accessories;
- leather jackets and clothing;
- leather upholstery and furniture.
For car interiors, see our specialist automotive threads. Leather products are often finished with leather labels carrying the brand logo.

We offer footwear and leather threads in classic black, brown, beige and white, as well as in contrasting and fashion colours. Where needed, we match the shade to a leather sample.
