Herringbone tape – a strong cotton tape with a zigzag weave

Herringbone tape (twill tape) is woven with a weave that forms the characteristic zigzag pattern known as “herringbone”. This construction makes it strong, low-stretch and tear-resistant, while remaining soft and pleasant to the touch. Types of herringbone tape

Yarn count and density

The density and handle of the tape depend on the count of the cotton yarn. The higher the count, the finer the yarn and the smoother the tape.

For clothing, tapes made from yarn count 20 and 40 are used most often.

Colours and logo tape

Cotton takes dye well, so herringbone tape can be made in a Pantone colour or to a sample. Natural tape emphasises the natural character of cotton and is in demand for eco collections and packaging. On request we print a logo or text on the tape – a popular solution for branded ties, hanger loops and cotton bags.

Herringbone or another tape?

Herringbone tape is matt, strong and practical. If you are looking for a decorative sheen, choose satin ribbon, and for a stable ribbed polyester ribbon – grosgrain. You will find all types in the ribbons section.

Herringbone tape in workwear and uniforms

In workwear, military clothing and uniforms, herringbone tape has a functional role: it takes the load along the seams, protects edges from fraying and withstands frequent industrial laundering. Dense tapes from yarn count 20 are used to reinforce pockets, waistbands and attachment points, while softer ones from yarn count 40 are used for ties and bindings. Care

Cotton herringbone tape withstands washing and ironing at higher temperatures than synthetic tapes. As with any cotton, slight shrinkage is possible on the first wash – for products with exact dimensions we recommend pre-shrunk tape or a test with a sample.
