Wholesale Urea Buttons

Urea (UF) buttons from the manufacturer: hard, heat-resistant and with a refined matte look. Suitable for uniforms, shirts and jackets, wholesale and with your logo.

Urea buttons: strength that withstands heat

Urea buttons, also known as UF buttons (from urea formaldehyde resin), are made from a thermoset plastic. Unlike thermoplastics, once cured this material does not soften when heated. That is why urea buttons keep their shape and colour through ironing, high-temperature washing and dry cleaning. Polkom manufactures and supplies urea buttons wholesale and to order for clothing, uniform and workwear manufacturers across Europe.

Properties of urea buttons

  • high hardness and scratch resistance;
  • heat resistance: they do not warp during ironing or industrial laundering;
  • resistance to dry cleaning;
  • good colour retention over time;
  • a refined, slightly matte look reminiscent of natural materials;
  • suitable for logo engraving.

Urea or polyester: what is the difference?

Both materials are synthetic but behave differently. Polyester buttons offer a huge variety of colours, effects and gloss levels and are an excellent choice for most fashion garments. Urea buttons are harder, heavier and far more resistant to high temperatures, so they are preferred where a garment is washed often and hot or ironed intensively. If you are unsure which material suits your design, we will advise you.

Applications

Urea buttons are most often used for:

  • uniforms: medical, hospitality and institutional;
  • workwear that is industrially laundered;
  • men's and women's shirts;
  • jackets, suits and trousers;
  • coats and outerwear with a classic look.

For classic menswear, see also our selection of men's buttons.

Sizes, colours and finishes

Sizes are given in lignes (L), where 1L = 0.635 mm. Shirts usually use 16L–18L (about 10–11.5 mm), cuffs and jacket sleeves 20L–24L (about 13–15 mm), and jacket or coat fronts 28L–36L (about 18–23 mm). Urea buttons are produced with two or four holes, with a rim or smooth, in solid colours or with marble, stone and horn effects. A matte finish is most typical, but a satin sheen is also possible.

Urea buttons with your logo and in a matched colour

Urea is coloured through the body, so the shade is even and does not wear off. We can produce buttons in a colour matched to your fabric sample or a Pantone reference, and engrave a logo or lettering, which is especially suitable for corporate uniforms. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does UF mean for buttons?
UF stands for urea formaldehyde resin. It is a thermoset plastic that hardens irreversibly after moulding and does not soften when heated. That is why urea buttons are hard, dimensionally stable and withstand ironing, high-temperature washing and dry cleaning.
Do urea buttons withstand industrial laundering?
Yes, this is one of their main advantages. Urea buttons do not warp, crack or lose their colour with frequent high-temperature washing, which makes them the standard choice for uniforms and workwear. As always, we recommend testing a sample with the specific fabric and wash programme.
Can I order urea buttons in the colour of my fabric?
Yes. Urea is coloured through the body, which allows an exact match to a fabric sample or Pantone reference. Send us a piece of the fabric or the colour code and we will make trial buttons for approval before mass production. The colour stays even and does not wear off over time.
Are urea buttons more expensive than polyester buttons?
Urea buttons usually cost more than standard polyester ones, because the raw material and processing are more specialised. The final price depends on size, model, colour and quantity. With larger quantities and standard colours the difference narrows. Send an enquiry with your order details and you will receive a specific quote.
