Coconut buttons: a natural material for sustainable collections
Coconut buttons are made from the hard shell of the coconut, a raw material that would otherwise be waste from the food industry. The result is a light, strong and completely natural trim with a characteristic fibrous texture and warm brown tones. Polkom supplies wholesale coconut buttons to clothing manufacturers, designers and distributors across Europe and, when needed, makes them to order with a logo, a specific shape or finish.
Benefits of coconut buttons
- natural, biodegradable material;
- unique pattern: every button has its own play of dark and light veins;
- low weight and good strength in everyday use;
- a warm, organic look that highlights natural fabrics;
- suitable for laser engraving of logos and lettering.
These qualities make coconut buttons a preferred choice for brands that communicate sustainability, craftsmanship and closeness to nature.
Types, sizes and finishing
Coconut shell is relatively thin, so the buttons are usually flat, with two or four holes, with a rim or a smooth profile. Sizes are given in lignes (L), where 1L = 0.635 mm.
- 14L–20L (about 9–13 mm): shirts, blouses, childrenswear;
- 24L–28L (about 15–18 mm): cardigans, dresses, light jackets;
- 32L and above (over 20 mm): outerwear, bags and decorative accents.
The surface can be natural (with visible texture), polished to a soft sheen or coated with clear lacquer for extra protection. The dark inner side and lighter outer side of the shell allow interesting contrasts when engraved.
Where coconut buttons are used
- linen and cotton shirts, summer dresses and trousers;
- knitwear: cardigans, jumpers, scarves;
- childrenswear and babywear with a natural look;
- bags, totes and accessories made from natural materials;
- home textiles: cushion covers, throws, decorative pillows.
If your collection is built around natural materials, combine them with wooden buttons or with corozo buttons for a cleaner, smoother look.
Caring for garments with coconut buttons
Coconut shell withstands washing but, like any natural material, prefers moderate temperatures. Avoid prolonged soaking and bleach, and when ironing do not press the iron directly onto the button. Lacquered models are more resistant to moisture and keep their colour longer.
Custom coconut buttons with your logo
Laser engraving on coconut shell produces a crisp, slightly smoky outline that looks natural and stylish. We can apply a logo, monogram or short lettering, choose a size and profile to suit the garment and make a sample before mass production.
