Wooden buttons: warmth and natural character
Wooden buttons bring a warmth to clothing that is hard to achieve with any other material. Visible growth rings and natural variations in the wood make every button slightly different and the garment more authentic. Polkom offers wholesale wooden buttons for clothing manufacturers, ateliers and distributors, as well as custom production with your logo, in a specific colour or to your design. As a natural, biodegradable material, wood is a logical choice for brands focused on sustainability.
Types of wooden buttons
Buttons are made from dense hardwoods that stand up to machining and everyday wear. Among the most common are beech, olive, maple and walnut, as well as bamboo. Each species has its own colour and grain, from the light, even tones of beech and maple to the expressive veining of olive and the dark tone of walnut.
Shapes
- round: classic, with two or four holes;
- with a rim or a recessed centre;
- shank buttons for knitwear and thicker fabrics;
- square, oval and novelty shapes;
- toggles for coats and duffle-style jackets.
Sizes
Size is given in lignes (L), where 1L = 0.635 mm. Small sizes of 16L–20L (about 10–13 mm) are for shirts, blouses and childrenswear; 24L–28L (about 15–18 mm) for cardigans and dresses; 32L–40L (about 20–25 mm) and larger for coats, outerwear, bags and decoration.
Finishes and colours
- natural: uncoated, with open texture;
- oil or wax: brings out the grain and gives light protection;
- clear lacquer: matte or gloss, for better moisture resistance;
- dyed: in a colour matched to your sample, with the grain still visible;
- laser engraving or branding: for logos and ornaments.
Where wooden buttons are used
Wooden buttons suit knitwear, cardigans and jumpers, coats and wool jackets, linen shirts, childrenswear, bags and accessories, as well as home textiles such as cushion covers, throws and decorative pillows. They pair well with natural fabrics and warm colour palettes. For a similar natural look, see also our coconut buttons and bone buttons.
Caring for garments with wooden buttons
Wood is a natural material and reacts to moisture and heat. We recommend washing at a moderate temperature, without prolonged soaking and without bleach. Lacquered models handle washing better than untreated ones. When ironing, do not press the iron directly onto the button.
Custom wooden buttons with your logo
Laser engraving on wood produces a crisp, slightly smoky outline with a natural look, ideal for a logo, monogram or short lettering. We select the wood, size and finish to suit the design, make a sample for approval and then the production run. Find out more in engraved buttons and our services.
