Herringbone tape – strength and a classic look

Herringbone tape (also known as herringbone twill tape) is recognisable by its characteristic weave pattern – diagonal lines that change direction to form a zigzag resembling a fish skeleton. This structure makes the tape strong, stable lengthwise and practically non-stretch, while remaining flexible and easy to sew.

That is why herringbone tape is favoured in garment making for functional tasks – reinforcing, shaping and finishing – but it is increasingly used as a visible decorative element on workwear, aprons, bags and home textiles too.

Applications

• reinforcing shoulder seams, necklines and edges that must not stretch;
• edge binding and inside seam finishing in jackets and trousers;
• hanger loops for garments, towels and aprons;
• ties for aprons, bags and cushions;

Materials: cotton, polyester or blend

Herringbone tape is made from cotton, polyester or a combination of the two, depending on the product requirements:

• cotton – natural matt look, soft handle, suitable for home textiles, aprons and eco products;
• polyester – higher strength, colourfastness and wear resistance, suitable for workwear and bags;
• blend – a balance between natural look and durability.

Widths from 3 to 100 mm

• 3–10 mm – fine reinforcement, hanger loops, small accessories;
• 15–30 mm – the most used widths in textile production;
• 40–60 mm – bag handles and trims, belts, technical products;
• 70–100 mm – wide handles, straps and special applications.

Colours and logo tape

Besides natural, white and black, herringbone tape can be dyed in virtually any shade – to Pantone, to a sample or to the client's corporate standard. On request, we print a logo or lettering on it, making it suitable for branded hanger loops, bag handles and packaging.

Herringbone or another tape?

When the tape has to carry a load and must not stretch, herringbone is the most practical choice. For a visible trim with a matt, ribbed look, see grosgrain ribbon, and for glossy decorative details, satin ribbon. You will find a full comparison in the ribbons and tapes section.
