Fabric-covered buttons: a perfect match with the material

Fabric-covered buttons are made by covering a metal or plastic base with fabric, leather or another material. This gives the button exactly the same colour and texture as the garment, or a deliberate contrast with it. Polkom makes custom and wholesale fabric-covered buttons, using the customer's material or one we source, for clothing manufacturers, ateliers, bridal boutiques and furniture makers.

How fabric-covered buttons are made

The button consists of a top cap over which the material is stretched and a back piece that locks it in place. The back can have a shank (loop) for sewing or a flat base with holes. The material is cut into a circle larger than the cap, stretched and clamped under the press so the surface stays smooth and free of creases.

Types of fabric-covered buttons

Textile

The most common option, covered in wool, linen, cotton, silk, satin or velvet. They suit suits, coats, dresses and blouses where a uniform look is needed and the button should not stand out.

Leather

Covered in genuine or faux leather. They are used on coats, jackets, bags and furniture and give a solid, luxurious finish.

With a decorative element

These combine a textile surface with a metal rim, relief or a decorative centre. They are popular for designer pieces, stage costumes and boutique items.

Sizes and shapes

Size is given in lignes (L), where 1L = 0.635 mm. Small covered buttons of 12L–18L (about 8–11.5 mm) are used for bridal and evening dresses, often in long rows; 20L–28L (about 13–18 mm) for blouses, dresses and jackets; 30L–40L (about 19–25 mm) and larger for coats and upholstery. Most buttons are round with a domed or flat profile.

Applications

  • bridal, evening and cocktail dresses;
  • suits, jackets and coats;
  • women's blouses and jackets in the same fabric as the buttons;
  • stage and period costumes;
  • upholstered furniture: buttoned headboards, sofas and armchairs;
  • decorative home textiles.

Benefits of fabric-covered buttons

  • a perfect match with the colour and texture of the item;
  • the option to use the customer's own fabric;
  • an elegant, clean look suited to formalwear;
  • flexibility: size, profile and base are chosen to suit the design;
  • the option of branding with a decorative element.

Ordering fabric-covered buttons in your fabric

Send us your material: a small piece is usually enough, with the amount depending on the size and number of buttons. We agree the size, profile and type of base, make a sample and, after approval, produce the full batch. Very thin or sheer fabrics sometimes need backing so the base does not show through, and we will advise on your specific case. See also our other services, including button attaching.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much fabric do I need to send for covered buttons?
The amount depends on the size and number of buttons, because a circle larger than the button itself is cut for each one. For small runs a piece about the size of an A4 sheet is often enough, while large quantities or bigger sizes need more. Send us the size and number and we will tell you exactly how much material is needed.
Can fabric-covered buttons be washed?
Yes, if the material and the base allow it. Metal bases are chosen to resist corrosion, and the fabric keeps its properties just like the garment itself. For delicate materials such as silk and velvet we recommend dry cleaning. Care instructions follow those of the fabric.
Are fabric-covered buttons suitable for furniture?
Yes. Covered buttons are widely used in upholstery for buttoning headboards, sofas, armchairs and stools. Furniture usually calls for stronger bases and larger sizes, and the buttons are covered in the upholstery fabric or leather for a uniform look.
Can I order leather-covered buttons?
Yes. We make buttons covered in genuine and faux leather, suitable for coats, jackets, bags and furniture. The leather needs to be thin and supple enough to stretch smoothly over the cap. Send us a sample of the material and we will check its suitability with a test button.
