Polyester buttons for clothing: the most versatile solution

Polyester buttons are the most widely used buttons in ready-to-wear worldwide, and for good reason. They combine low weight, good strength and almost unlimited options for colour, shape and surface. Polkom manufactures and supplies wholesale polyester buttons for shirts, blouses, trousers, jackets, coats, knitwear and childrenswear, both from stock and made to order with your design and logo.

Polyester is a resin that is cast and then machined. This technology allows control over density, thickness, the number and position of holes, lustre and colour depth, which is why the same material can produce extremely different models.

How polyester buttons are made

Depending on the form of the raw material, there are two main methods:

  • Sheet buttons: the resin is cast into a sheet from which blanks are cut. This usually produces even, single-colour models, well suited to classic ready-to-wear.
  • Rod buttons: the resin is formed into a rod and sliced into discs. This method allows multicolour effects, colour shifts and veining, so it is used for more decorative models.

Additives in the raw material create a pearlescent sheen, solid white, a metallic effect, transparency or translucency. This lets polyester convincingly imitate natural materials: see our imitation horn buttons, which are hard to tell apart from real horn.

Sizes, shapes and holes

We produce polyester buttons in sizes from 12L to 72L (approximately 7.6 mm to 45.7 mm), where 1 ligne is 0.635 mm. Models are available:

  • with two or four holes, or with a shank at the back;
  • flat, with a recessed centre, with a rim, domed or with a relief profile;
  • in different thicknesses, from fine blouse buttons to heavy models for coats and hand knits.

Polyester button colours and finishes

Colouring can be through the body or on the surface only, and the colour is matched to your fabric sample or a catalogue code. For lustre we offer four main options:

  • bright (gloss);
  • semi-bright;
  • matte;
  • matte-bright: a combination of matte and gloss areas on one button.

Printing, inner colouring, engraving and lettering can also be added. For logo buttons see also our engraved buttons section.

Where they are used

Polyester buttons suit almost every fabric and style: clean designs for men's shirts and uniforms, delicate, fine buttons for women's dresses, and heavy, large buttons for coats and chunky knits. They withstand repeated machine washing and normal dry cleaning, and their price makes them the natural choice for large runs. When ironing, avoid direct contact between a hot iron and the button. If the garment needs a very high temperature, consider urea buttons.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sheet and rod polyester buttons?
Sheet buttons are cut from a cast sheet of resin and are usually single-coloured and even. Rod buttons are sliced from a cast rod, which allows colour shifts, veining and more complex effects. Sheet models are often chosen for classic ready-to-wear, while rod buttons are used for decorative designs and imitations of natural materials.
Can you make polyester buttons in the exact colour of our fabric?
Yes. Polyester takes colour very well, so we match the colour to your fabric sample or a catalogue colour code. Before mass production we prepare a sample so you can approve the shade, lustre and surface finish. That way the buttons fit your collection exactly.
Do polyester buttons withstand washing and dry cleaning?
Quality polyester buttons withstand repeated machine washing and standard dry cleaning without losing their colour or shape. They do not like direct contact with a very hot iron, so when ironing it is best to work around the buttons or iron through a cloth. For items with high temperature requirements, we recommend urea buttons.
