When ordering wooden buttons wholesale, specify the wood, the size in lignes or millimetres, the shape and number of holes, the finish (natural, oil, lacquer, dyed), any logo and the quantity per size. Approve a physical sample and accept that a natural material has slight variations in tone and grain. The price is determined by these parameters and is given after an inquiry.

Wooden buttons wholesale – what to state in the specification
Wood
Beech and maple give a light, even look and take dye well. Olive wood has a striking grain, walnut a dark, noble tone, and bamboo is associated with sustainability. The choice affects the price, the look and the behaviour in the wash.
Size and shape
State the size in lignes or millimetres, with a clear unit. Specify the shape – round, square, toggle, rimmed, with a recessed centre – and the construction: 2 or 4 holes, shank. If the garment has several sizes, give the quantity for each separately.
Finish
| Finish | Look | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Natural | matt, raw, the most natural | decoration, items rarely washed |
| Oil or wax | silky sheen, enhanced grain | knitwear, coats |
| Clear lacquer (matt or gloss) | protected, even | garments that are washed |
| Dyed | colour matched to sample, texture remains visible | matching the fabric or contrast |
| Engraved | burnt-in logo or ornament | branding |
Colour
For dyed buttons, send a piece of the fabric or a Pantone textile number. Bear in mind that wood takes dye differently depending on the species and grain – denser parts colour less. So the final tone may differ slightly from a paper colour card. A physical sample is the only reliable reference.
Natural variation within a batch
Every wooden button is slightly different: grain, density and shade vary even within one batch. This is part of the value of a natural material, but it must be taken into account in planning:
- approve a sample that shows the range of variation, not one "perfect" button;
- order the quantity for the whole series at once;
- if one garment has buttons in different sizes, order them together;
- if maximum uniformity is needed, choose an even wood such as beech or maple and a dyed finish.
Samples
The sample is key with wooden buttons. Check it sewn onto the actual fabric, after washing on the programme from the label and under different lighting. Pay attention to whether the dye bleeds onto light fabric, whether the lacquer stays intact and whether the holes are smooth and do not cut the thread. For buttons with a logo, check the legibility of the engraving at actual size.
What determines the price
- type of wood;
- size and thickness of the button;
- complexity of the shape and number of operations;
- finish, dyeing and lacquering;
- laser engraving or another logo method;
- quantity and packaging.

Quantities
Minimum quantities depend on the article. Standard models can usually be ordered in smaller quantities, while buttons in a special colour, non-standard shape or with a logo require a larger run. When calculating, include spare buttons for each garment and a sensible reserve for rejects, because a natural material sometimes has defects that are sorted out during inspection.
Packaging and storage
Wooden buttons should be stored in a dry place, away from sources of heat and moisture. During long storage in a very humid environment wood can absorb moisture, and in a very dry one it can crack. That is why it is good to use the buttons within a reasonable time after delivery and to keep them in their original packaging.
Lead times and planning
Standard models from stock are delivered faster, while custom buttons go through sampling, approval and production, so plan them early in the collection calendar. Specific lead times depend on the article, the quantity and the type of finish. Allow time for a wash test of the sample, especially with dyed buttons.
Inspection on delivery
When you receive the batch, check a random sample for size with a calliper, colour against the approved sample, smoothness of the holes and any cracks or splinters. Separate and mark any defective pieces before the buttons reach the production line. If something does not match the sample, report it immediately, with the batch number and photos – this is the fastest way to solve the problem.
Stock models and custom production
For fast series and basic styles, use wooden buttons from stock in standard sizes and finishes. For your own identity – colour, shape or logo – order production to your specification. The two approaches can be combined in one collection. Find out more about logo techniques in engraved buttons, and the full range by material in our buttons category.
