Logo tape is a textile tape – satin, grosgrain, cotton or polyester – on which the brand logo or name is printed continuously along its whole length. In clothing it is used to cover the inside neck seam, for hanger loops, bindings and facings, and in retail for packaging and gifts. It is supplied on a roll and cut as needed.
Where logo tape is used
Inside neck (neck tape)
The tape covers the seam joining the collar to the body of a T-shirt, sweatshirt or shirt. Besides making the seam smoother and more comfortable against the skin, it shows the brand every time the garment is put on. It is one of the most recognisable details of quality knitwear.
Hanger loops
Small loops of tape are sewn into the neck of jackets and coats or into the waistband of trousers and skirts so they can hang on a hook or hanger. Logo tape makes this functional detail part of the brand.
Bindings and inside finishes
The tape is used to finish edges, vents and linings – inside pockets, along zips, on jacket seams. The repeating logo adds a sense of attention to detail.
Packaging and gifts
Boutiques and online shops tie boxes, bags and gift pouches with logo ribbon. This way the packaging becomes an extension of the brand.
Materials
| Tape | Look | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Satin | Smooth, with a sheen | Packaging, loops, neck tape on finer garments |
| Grosgrain | Ribbed, dense | Loops, bindings, heavier garments and accessories |
| Cotton | Matte, natural | Neck tape on cotton T-shirts and sweatshirts |
| Polyester | Strong, stable | Workwear and sportswear, bindings |

How logo tape is printed
On continuous tape the design repeats at a set interval. The method is chosen according to the quantity and type of tape:
- Flexographic printing – for large quantities, when the same tape is used across many styles.
- Screen printing – for a dense, rich colour, including light print on dark tape.
- Thermal transfer – for smaller quantities and smoother synthetic tapes.
It is important to decide whether the tape will be washed with the garment. Neck tape and loops are washed constantly and require textile inks with good fastness. Packaging ribbon is not washed and allows more freedom.
How to plan the design
- Tape width – determines the maximum logo height. Leave a margin at both edges.
- Repeat interval – the distance between two logos. Too dense looks intrusive; too sparse and a cut piece may have no logo.
- Orientation – along the tape or across it, upright or alternating.
- Colour – contrast between tape and print, by Pantone.
- Piece length – for loops, the repeat should match the length so the logo is centred.
Neck tape – practical tips
- Choose a soft tape – it touches the neck every time the garment is worn.
- Do not make the logo too large and dense; a fine print keeps the tape flexible.
- Check that the tape shrinks in the wash as much as the fabric; if it shrinks more, the collar will pucker.
- On light T-shirts choose a light tape so it does not show through the fabric.
Logo tape or a neck label
Logo tape does not replace the information label – the composition and care instructions remain mandatory and are usually on a separate label in the side seam. The tape can, however, take on the role of the brand label. Some brands drop the separate label at the back of the neck and rely on the tape and on printing on the fabric, which makes the collar softer.
Common mistakes
- A logo that does not fit the width. The logo is designed horizontally and wide, while the tape is narrow – the result is an illegible miniature print. Sometimes it is better to use only the brand's mark or initials.
- Too large a repeat interval. When loops are cut, some pieces are left without a logo or the logo is cut in half.
- A tape unsuitable for washing. Packaging ribbon used as neck tape shrinks or fades after the first washes.
- No sample. Print colour on ribbed grosgrain looks different from that on smooth satin; check it on a sample.
What the price depends on
The price of logo tape depends on the type and width of the tape, the printing method, the number of colours, the total quantity in metres and whether the tape is supplied on a roll or cut into pieces. With large quantities and one-colour printing, the price per metre is lowest. A specific quote is given after an inquiry with details of the use and quantity.
What to include in your inquiry
- Use – neck tape, loops, bindings, packaging.
- Type, width and colour of the tape.
- The logo as a vector file, print colour, repeat and orientation.
- Total quantity in metres and whether the tape is washed with the product.
