The size of an eyelet is defined by three measurements: the inner diameter of the hole, the outer diameter of the flange and the height of the shank. The inner diameter is chosen according to the cord or lace that will pass through it, and the shank height according to the thickness of the material. Eyelets of 4–5 mm are typical for shoelaces, 6–10 mm for drawstrings on clothing, and larger ones for bags, curtains and canvas.
How eyelet sizes are measured
Every eyelet has several parameters that determine whether it will fit the product. When ordering from our eyelets category, specify at least the first three.
Inner diameter
This is the hole through which the cord, lace or ring passes. It is measured with a calliper from inner edge to inner edge of an eyelet that has already been set. This is the measurement people mean when they look for "4 mm eyelets" or "10 mm eyelets".
Outer flange diameter
The flange is the flat visible part around the hole. A wide flange distributes the load over a larger area and has a more pronounced decorative effect. A narrow flange is more discreet and suitable for fine fabrics.
Shank height
The shank is the tube that passes through the material and is rolled over on the reverse side. It must be slightly longer than the thickness of the material so that there is something to roll over. If it is too short, the eyelet does not grip. If it is too long, it rolls unevenly and can damage the fabric.
Washer
For eyelets with a washer, the washer is measured too – its hole must match the shank, and its diameter is close to that of the flange.
Table of eyelet sizes by application
| Inner diameter | Typical application | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| about 3–4 mm | lingerie, corsets, thin laces, children's clothing | often without washer, thin fabric |
| about 4–5 mm | shoelaces on shoes and sneakers | with washer on leather and dense textiles |
| about 6–8 mm | drawstrings on sweatshirts, trousers, anoraks | the most common size for clothing |
| about 8–12 mm | bags, backpacks, belts, thicker cords | eyelet with washer, longer shank |
| about 12–20 mm | canvas, awnings, advertising banners | strong eyelets with washer, set with a die |
| about 25–40 mm and more | curtains and drapes | usually plastic ring eyelets |
The values are approximate. Different manufacturers have their own numbering, and some markets use numbers instead of millimetres. So when ordering, always state the dimensions in millimetres.
How to choose the inner diameter
The inner diameter must be slightly larger than the thickness of the cord so that it slides freely. The practical rule:
- measure the thickness of the cord or lace at its widest point, including the aglet;
- add about 1–2 mm of clearance for free movement;
- if the cord will be pulled tight often, choose a slightly larger hole so that it does not wear.
If you use flat laces, measure their width folded, because they compress when passing through the hole. It is a good idea to choose suitable cords together with the eyelets, so that you can check compatibility on the sample.
How to choose the shank height
The shank height depends on the total thickness of all the layers the eyelet passes through – fabric, lining, interlining or leather. Measure the folded stack under light pressure. The shank must be slightly longer so that it rolls over cleanly. For thick materials such as belt leather or canvas, choose a model with a long shank.
Size of the hole in the material
The hole you punch must be equal to the outer diameter of the shank or very slightly smaller. If the hole is larger, the eyelet rotates and may fall out. If it is smaller, the shank gets crushed when set. Punch with a hole punch, not scissors, and test first on a piece of the same material.
Eyelets with or without a hole
People sometimes look for "eyelets with a hole" – this usually means finished eyelets with an open centre, as opposed to decorative rivets and studs, which are solid. For holes through which nothing passes and whose only purpose is decoration, rivets may be more suitable.
Common mistakes when choosing a size
- Ordering by inner diameter only, without checking the shank.
- Choosing an eyelet for a cord without allowing for the aglet, which is thicker than the cord.
- Using the same eyelet for thin jersey and thick leather.
- No washer on soft and knitted materials, where the hole stretches.
- Skipping the test with the actual material and tool in the factory.
Material and size
Size is not the only thing to choose. Brass eyelets do not rust and are suitable for products that are washed. Aluminium ones are light but softer and suited mainly to light applications. Steel ones are strong but require a durable finish. Plastic eyelets are used mainly for curtains and products exposed to moisture.
If you order several sizes for one collection, arrange them in a table by article – product, material, inner diameter, shank and finish. This way the factory will not confuse the eyelets for the hood drawstring with those for the hem, and on a repeat order you will be able to request exactly the same specification.
