Sewing threads for industrial and garment production
Sewing threads join the parts of a garment and determine how long the product will last. A good sewing thread is smooth, even in thickness and strong and elastic enough not to break at high machine speeds or during wear. Polkom, a manufacturer and wholesaler of garment accessories, supplies sewing threads wholesale to sewing units, fashion brands, home textile manufacturers and ateliers, and helps choose the right article for each material.
Types of sewing thread
Polyester sewing threads
The most widely used type. Polyester is strong, resistant to light and washing, and practically does not shrink. It suits most fabrics – from fine shirting to heavy trousers and jackets.
Core-spun threads
Here a polyester filament core is wrapped in cotton or polyester fibres. They combine the strength of polyester with a matt look and good machine performance. They are preferred for jeans, workwear and products with heavily loaded seams.
Cotton sewing threads
Made from cotton, usually mercerised for greater smoothness and sheen. Suitable for linen, cotton and wool and for products that will be dyed after sewing. More about them in the cotton threads section.
Textured threads for overlock
Bulky, soft polyester or polyamide threads for the loopers of overlock and coverstitch machines. They cover the edge well, are elastic and pleasant to the touch – ideal for jersey, lingerie and sportswear.
Thickness and needle choice
Sewing thread thickness is given as a ticket number. The higher the number, the finer the thread.
- Ticket 180–150 – very fine fabrics, lingerie, silk.
- Ticket 120 – the all-round number for shirts, dresses, blouses and most garments.
- Ticket 80–75 – heavier fabrics, trousers, jackets.
- Ticket 40–20 – decorative and heavy-duty seams, denim, canvas.
The thread must match the needle – a thread that is too thick in a thin needle frays and breaks, while one that is too thin in a thick needle produces an uneven seam.
