A snap button is a small detail that decides how a shirt, a baby bodysuit or a winter jacket closes. That is why Polkom offers not one but five snap button systems – 34 models in total – with technical data for every size. Here you will find how to choose the right system for your fabric, which sizes and finishes are available, how the logo is applied to the cap and how to avoid the most common setting mistakes.
Which snap button system to choose
The choice starts with the fabric and the garment. Lightweight materials need a snap that does not strain the fabric, while heavy ones need a system that still holds after hundreds of closings.
The metal parts are made in a finish of your choice from our finish chart. All models are available nickel-free – an important requirement for childrenswear and for the European Union market. The snap cap can be made in any size and colour – for bags, dresses and wherever snap buttons are used. Mother-of-pearl, marble, crystal and plastic caps are moulded in a colour matched to your sample.

Snap buttons with your logo
A logo on the cap turns the snap button into part of the brand identity. On metal caps the logo is embossed, on mother-of-pearl and marble caps it is laser-engraved, on plastic caps it is printed, and on the transparent mother-of-pearl cap it is printed underneath. On open-ring models the logo is placed on the stud (male part). Send us your logo in vector format and we will suggest the right model, size and technique.
Snap buttons are set with special dies on a hand press, a lever press or on motorised and automatic machines. Each system and size uses its matching die. Sew-on models are sewn on by hand or by machine.
There must be no difference in layer thickness at the setting point – for example a seam under the snap.
Choose the prong or post length according to the fabric thickness: long prongs for heavy and multi-layer areas, short ones for thin fabrics.
On knitwear and stretch materials, reinforce the area with interfacing or tape.
Send us fabric samples (mock-up) – we will do a test setting and recommend the model, the prong length and the press setting.
If needed, we prepare a technical sheet with setting instructions for your fabric.
Common setting problems and how to avoid them
Problem
Common cause
Solution
The prongs do not grip the fabric
fabric too thin or too stretchy, prongs too short
longer prongs, interfacing reinforcement, test setting
The prongs bend inwards or outwards
wrong die, incorrect impact force, die not centred
the right die for the size, adjusting force and centring
Weak click – the snap opens by itself
wrong socket/stud combination, deformation during setting
original set from one system, die check
Mark or dent on the cap
impact too strong or worn die
lighter impact, replacing or polishing the die
The cap rotates
insufficient pressing, fabric thicker than planned
longer post, force correction
The fabric is cut or puckers
fabric not taut during setting, sharp die edges
keeping the fabric taut, die check
The fabric tears when opened quickly
unsuitable snap position, thin fabric without reinforcement

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the 54 and 61 systems?
The 54 system is for thin and medium fabrics such as shirts, bodysuits and denim shirts. The 61 system is stronger and is used on heavy fabrics – jackets, coats and denim jackets. The two systems cannot be combined with each other.
When should we choose a prong snap button?
Prong snaps are best suited to knitwear, bodysuits, baby and childrenswear and shirts. The prongs pass through the fabric without cutting it and no hole needs to be punched.
Can the snap button carry our logo?
Yes. The logo is placed on the cap – embossed on metal caps, laser-engraved on mother-of-pearl and marble caps, printed on plastic caps. On open-ring models the logo is placed on the stud (male part).
Do you offer nickel-free snap buttons?
Yes. All models are available with a nickel-free finish – suitable for childrenswear and for European Union requirements.
What sizes do the snap buttons come in?
From 6.8 mm for prong models up to 30 mm for the 54, 61 and sew-on systems. The exact sizes for each model are listed in the tables above.
Can we get a sample and help with setting?
Yes. Send us fabric samples – we do a test setting, recommend the model and prong length and prepare a technical sheet with setting instructions.
