Woven labels for bags are placed on the inside – in the lining seam or a pocket – or on the outside, as a flag in the side seam, a label sewn on a pocket or a label on the flap. For canvas bags, backpacks and toiletry bags, a woven label is a light and durable way to brand that withstands rubbing, moisture and weight. On leather and more luxurious bags it is often combined with a leather label or a metal logo plate.

Woven labels for bags – where they are placed

Inside label

The inside label carries the logo and sometimes information about the material. It is sewn into the lining seam, the inside pocket or the lining below the opening. Here the label does not need to be large – the customer sees it when opening the bag, and it confirms the brand.

Outside label

The outside label is a visible branding element. Typical positions are:

  • a flag, centre-folded and sewn into the side seam of a tote bag;
  • a label sewn on the front pocket of a backpack;
  • a label on the flap or shoulder strap;
  • a small label on the corner of a toiletry bag or case.

Label size

Bags are larger than most garments, so the outside label can be larger, especially on backpacks and holdalls. The inside label, however, stays small. A flag in the side seam of a tote must be sized so the logo can be read when the bag is full and the fabric is taut. Place a paper template at actual size before ordering.

How the label is attached

  • Caught in a seam – the easiest, for centre-fold labels; do it when sewing the side seam.
  • Sewn around the perimeter – for flat labels on pockets, flaps and straps; sew before joining the panels, as it is easier.
  • Heat-seal adhesive – can be convenient on thin synthetic materials, but in high-stress places sewing is better.
  • Rivets – on thicker materials, the label can also be fixed with decorative rivets at the corners.

With heavy fabrics such as canvas, denim and Cordura, use a strong polyester thread and a suitable needle. If the label is in a place that carries weight – for example the top edge of a tote – do not place it right in the handle area.

Woven, leather or metal label for a bag

  • Woven label – light, detailed, with many colours; suitable for textile bags and backpacks.
  • Leather or faux leather label – heavier, more luxurious look; works well on canvas and denim. See our leather labels.
  • Metal plate – the most luxurious option, especially on leather bags. See our metal logo plates.

A typical combination is a metal plate or leather label outside and a woven label in the lining.

Design for bags

  1. The outside label must be visible from a distance – use clear contrast.
  2. Match the base to the bag colours; with many colourways, consider a neutral label.
  3. If the label is a flag, the logo should be on both sides or at least on the visible one.
  4. On technical-style backpacks, an HD label allows small text and fine details.

Promotional and corporate bags

Canvas bags are often ordered as promotional or corporate gifts. On these the logo is usually printed on the bag itself, but a small woven label adds a sense of quality and sets them apart from cheap promotional items. For such runs, the more economical taffeta or a standard damask with a one- or two-colour logo is suitable. If the bags are for different events or clients, one common label from the bag maker plus custom printing is a practical solution.

Labels and bag hardware from one supplier

A bag has other trims that affect its overall look – zips, buckles, rings, eyelets, handles. When choosing the label, think about the whole look: the metal colour of the hardware can be repeated in a gold or silver thread on the label, and the zip colour in its base. This way the brand looks consistent and the product finished.

Wear and care

Bags rub against clothes, tables and seats and are exposed to sun and rain. A polyester woven label withstands friction and does not fade quickly. The edges, however, are the weak point – a well-sealed ultrasonic or laser-cut edge, or a woven selvedge, does not fray. If the bag is machine-washed, the label tolerates the wash just as on a garment.

Common mistakes

  • A large inside label that folds and gets in the way.
  • A flag sewn close to the handle, where it wears away.
  • Weak thread on heavy fabrics – the label tears off.
  • A tone-on-tone label on the outside that cannot be seen.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What label should I put on a canvas bag?
For a canvas bag, the most popular option is a woven label in damask or taffeta, centre-folded and sewn as a flag into the side seam or top edge. It is light, durable and inexpensive to sew on. If you want a more luxurious look, you can add a leather label on the front and keep the woven one inside.
How do I attach a label to a backpack?
On a backpack, the label is easiest to sew on the front pocket or shoulder strap before the panels are joined. Use a strong polyester thread and sew around the perimeter. If the backpack is already sewn, the label can be caught in an existing seam or fixed with rivets at the corners on thicker materials.
Woven or leather label for a bag?
A woven label is lighter, more detailed and better suited to textile bags, backpacks and toiletry bags. A leather label gives a heavier, more luxurious look and works well on canvas, denim and leather. Many brands combine the two: a leather or metal element outside for visibility and a woven label inside for the logo.
