Damask, Satin or Taffeta Labels – Which Weave to Choose

Polkom
Дамаск, сатен или тафта етикет – коя тъкан да изберете

Damask, satin or taffeta label – the choice depends on three things: how fine the detail in the logo is, whether the label will touch the skin and what look you want. Damask is the most versatile and detailed, satin is the softest and shiniest, and taffeta is the most economical but stiffer. Below you will find a comparison and practical recommendations for each case.

Damask – the standard for brand labels

Damask is woven with fine polyester yarns at high density. The result is a smooth, even surface on which small lettering and more complex shapes are legible. It is soft but holds its shape, does not distort when sewn on and looks "expensive" without shining.

When to choose damask

  • The main brand label at the neck of T-shirts, shirts, dresses and sweatshirts.
  • Logos with text, fine lines or several colours.
  • When you want one label for the whole collection.

Satin – softness and sheen

In a satin weave the yarns "float" over longer stretches of the surface, which gives the characteristic sheen and slippery feel. Satin woven labels suit places where comfort comes first and where a shiny look fits the collection. Detail is slightly more limited than with damask, so the logo should be cleaner.

When to choose satin

  • Lingerie, nightdresses, pyjamas.
  • Baby and childrenswear.
  • Eveningwear, silk and viscose blouses.

Taffeta – economical and strong

Taffeta is a weave with a simpler structure and thicker yarns. It is stiffer, with a visible "grid" and lower detail. That makes it suitable for simple logos, large lettering and functional labels. Thanks to the lower density it weaves faster and is the most cost-effective option for large quantities.

When to choose taffeta

  • Size labels with a large number or letter.
  • Workwear, uniforms, promotional textiles.
  • Labels that do not touch the skin – on bags, cases, home textiles.

How to choose in practice

  1. Look at the logo. Is there text under 2–3 mm high or fine lines? If so – damask or high definition.
  2. Think about the skin. A label at the neck of a T-shirt or on lingerie – damask or satin.
  3. Think about the look. Matt and understated – damask. Shiny and luxurious – satin. Functional – taffeta.
  4. Do the sums. On a very large run of a simple label, taffeta can make a noticeable difference to the budget.

Common misconceptions

  • "Satin is always more luxurious." Not necessarily – many premium brands use matt damask because it looks more understated.
  • "Taffeta is poor quality." It is strong and durable; it is simply better suited to simple designs and places out of contact with the skin.
  • "The weave determines durability." All three types withstand washing; the edges and the fold matter more for comfort and durability.

How they behave after washing and wear

All three types are polyester and keep their colour in normal home washing. The differences are felt in the hand. Damask stays flat and soft, becoming even slightly more flexible over time. Satin keeps its sheen, but the longer floats can snag on coarse fabrics or hook and loop. Taffeta remains relatively stiff, so if folded incorrectly its corners can be felt. If the garment is washed often at high temperatures, ask for a sample and test it on the actual wash programme.

Ground colour and contrast

The weave also affects how colours look. On satin, dark colours look deeper and more saturated because of the sheen, and light ones slightly pearlescent. On damask colours are more matt and even, and on taffeta the structure of the weave shows through the colour. If your brand relies on a specific shade, compare samples on different weaves with the same Pantone before choosing.

Combining in one collection

There is nothing to stop you using different weaves for different labels. A typical combination is damask for the main brand label, taffeta for the size label and a printed care label. This way each label does its job at a sensible cost. When combining, ask for samples of all types to check that the colours match. It is also good for all labels to share a common visual logic – the same typeface, similar margins and the same ground colour – so that even different weaves look like part of one system. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a damask and a taffeta label?
Damask is woven with finer yarns at higher density, so it is softer, smoother and allows small text and complex logos. Taffeta has thicker yarns and a simpler structure, is stiffer and shows less detail, but is more economical. Damask is for the brand label, while taffeta is often used for size and functional labels.
Which woven label is best for lingerie?
For lingerie a satin or soft damask label with well-finished edges – ultrasonic cut or woven selvedge – is most often chosen. It is important that the label is small and sewn into a seam where it does not rub. On very thin and stretchy fabrics some brands prefer a printed label or a heat-seal label.
Does a satin woven label wear off?
No. The logo on a satin woven label is woven from yarn, so it does not rub off like print. With very intensive use the longer floats on the surface may snag, but with normal washing and wear the label keeps its appearance. If heavy mechanical stress is expected, damask is the more stable choice.
