Denim threads – strength and character of the seam
In jeans, the seam is both construction and the brand's signature. Double contrast seams on pockets and legs, bartacks and heavy waistband seams must withstand heavy washing, abrasion, enzyme and laser treatment without losing strength or appearance. Polkom supplies denim threads wholesale to manufacturers of jeans, jackets and denim workwear, and helps combine the right construction, thickness and colour.
Types of denim threads
Polyester/cotton core-spun threads
A polyester filament core wrapped in cotton. The core provides strength, while the cotton wrap protects the thread from heating in the needle and during ironing. When washed, the cotton reacts like the fabric and creates the typical worn effect, and the seam colour comes close to the tone of the denim. This is the classic choice for visible seams on jeans.
Polyester/polyester core-spun threads
More resistant to chemical and enzyme washing, with excellent colourfastness. They are suitable for joining seams, overlock and products where the seam must keep its original colour.
Laser-resistant threads
The laser creates bleached areas and patterns by breaking down the indigo on the fabric surface. However, the high energy can burn or break standard thread in the treated area. Special poly-cotton threads with an optimised core have been tested at four laser power levels – light, medium, strong and very strong – and retain over half of their strength even after the most intensive treatment. They are available in ticket 30 and 50 and in a colour of your choice, and they are also wash-resistant and low-shrinkage.
Cotton and filament threads
Mercerised cotton threads give a natural look and are suitable for garments dyed after sewing. Filament polyester threads provide high strength with a finer thread and a bright, even decorative seam.
Multicolour and embroidery threads
Multicolour threads, dyed in up to four colours, give decorative seams a modern look. For embroidery on denim, matt polyester threads with high lightfastness and glow-in-the-dark threads are used.
Contrast topstitching
The classic colours for topstitching on jeans are mustard, honey, ochre, beige and white, but many brands also use their own corporate colour. Usually ticket 20–30 is used for topstitching and a finer thread for joining seams. Match the thickness to the needle and check the washing effect on a sample, because the seam colour changes together with the fabric.
Thickness guide
- Ticket 20–30 – visible decorative seams on pockets, legs and waistband.
- Ticket 40–50 – double seams and loaded areas.
- Ticket 75–120 – joining seams, overlock and internal operations.
Washing and finishing
Before series production, test the thread with the same wash you will use – stones, enzymes, bleaching or laser. Core-spun threads with a cotton wrap give the most natural worn look, while polyester ones keep a brighter colour. For denim workwear, threads with a water-repellent finish and high abrasion resistance are also suitable.
Metal accessories and labels for jeans
Polkom has over 30 years of experience as a manufacturer of accessories for fashion, furniture, footwear and bags. Besides threads, we also supply the metal accessories for jeans – metal buttons, rivets and zips, as well as jacquard and leather labels. This way the seam, the metal accessories and the labels are coordinated in colour and style.
