Threads for Mattresses and Quilting

Needle and bobbin threads for quilting, mattress tape-edge threads, prewound bobbins and threads with special properties from the manufacturer for mattresses, duvets and quilted jackets.

Threads for quilting and mattress production

Quilting joins the fabric, filling and backing into one layer and gives a mattress, duvet or quilted jacket its characteristic raised look. Multi-needle quilting machines run long and fast, so the thread must unwind evenly, not break and give a uniform seam on materials of different thickness. Polkom supplies threads wholesale to manufacturers of mattresses, duvets, bedspreads, home textiles and outerwear, and is also a suitable partner for the furniture industry.

Needle and bobbin thread for quilting

Needle thread

High-tenacity 100% polyester filament thread developed specifically for quilting. It is available in two thicknesses, has a uniform structure and a special lubrication for high-speed machines. It gives a clean seam on fabrics of different thickness and is preferred by manufacturers of mattresses, home textiles and quilted jackets.

Bobbin thread

Textured high-tenacity polyester with a bulky structure, high elasticity and low shrinkage. It is available in four thicknesses and on a colour card of about 300 shades. Its bulk covers the back of the quilting well and prevents seam puckering. It is also used as a bobbin or looper thread on lockstitch and overlock machines.

Threads on special cones

For quilting, polyester filament threads in two thicknesses are also available, wound on cones with a special cap. It ensures smooth unwinding and prevents tangling, which is important when one machine runs dozens of cones at the same time.

Threads for tape edges and joining seams

Stronger threads are used for sewing mattress tape edges, attaching tapes and handles and joining covers: core-spun polyester, filament polyester in medium thicknesses, and polyamide 6.6 for heavily loaded seams. Smooth threads without surface fibres give a clean, lint-free look on light-coloured fabrics.

Prewound bobbins

Prewound bobbins keep constant tension, have a length difference of about 1% and can be changed at the same time on all heads of the machine. The solid-core versions hold up to three times more thread, which reduces stoppages and waste. There are also bobbins that fit directly into the existing bobbin case without modifying the machine and contain at least twice as much thread as an ordinary bobbin.

Threads with special properties for mattresses

  • Flame-resistant – para-aramid threads for mattresses with fire safety requirements. See the threads for protective clothing.
  • Insect-repellent – threads with plant extracts that repel insects and bed bugs even in hard-to-reach seams. More in the functional threads section.
  • Recycled – sewing threads made of recycled polyester for mattresses and home textiles.

Applications

  • mattresses, mattress toppers and protectors;
  • lightweight duvets, bedspreads and futons;
  • quilted jackets, coats and linings;
  • upholstered furniture and decorative home textiles.

Tips for trouble-free quilting

  • Use needle and bobbin threads of compatible thicknesses so that the stitch is balanced.
  • Check the tension of each head after changing a thread batch.
  • Store the cones away from dust and direct light, in a room with moderate humidity.
  • Test a new item on the actual pack of fabric, filling and backing before starting the series.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between needle and bobbin thread for quilting?
The needle thread is made of high-tenacity polyester filament – smooth, strong and uniform, to withstand the high speed of multi-needle machines and give a clean seam on top. The bobbin thread is textured polyester, bulkier and more elastic. It covers the back, compensates for differences in material thickness and prevents seam puckering.
Why use prewound bobbins for quilting?
Prewound bobbins save winding, keep the same tension from start to finish and have almost identical length. This way all heads of the machine can be reloaded at once with almost no thread left over. Solid-core bobbins hold up to three times more thread, which reduces machine stoppages.
Do you offer flame-resistant threads for mattresses?
Yes. For mattresses with fire safety requirements we offer para-aramid threads that withstand up to about 500 °C and self-extinguish when removed from the flame. We also offer polyester threads with a flame-retardant finish. Choose the thread according to the standard your product will be tested to and state it in your enquiry.
