A leather label for a hat is usually small – between 3 and 6 cm – and is placed on the turn-up (cuff) of a beanie or on the front panel of a baseball cap. For knitwear, thin faux leather or soft genuine leather is preferred, sewn on by hand or by machine through pre-punched holes so the knit does not stretch. For baseball caps, the label is sewn onto the panel before the cap is assembled.
Leather labels for hats: types of hat and positions
Beanies
The most popular position is the centre front of the folded cuff. The label is seen immediately and emphasises the handcrafted character of the knit. Alternatives are the side of the cuff or the back on hats without a turn-up. On hats without a cuff, the label is sewn about 3–5 cm from the bottom edge.
Baseball caps
The leather patch is placed on the front centre panel, instead of or in combination with embroidery. Another option is a small label on the back panel above the adjuster, or on a leather adjuster itself.
Flat caps, berets and brimmed hats
The label is placed on the side of the band, at the back, or as a narrow strip wrapped around the base of the crown.
Size and shape
| Type of hat | Usual sizes | Suitable shapes |
|---|---|---|
| Beanie with cuff | 4–6 × 2–3 cm | Rectangle with rounded corners, circle, oval |
| Children's beanie | 3–4 × 1.5–2.5 cm | Circle, small rectangle |
| Baseball cap (front panel) | 5–7 × 3–5 cm | Rectangle, hexagon, shield, custom outline |
| Flat cap or brimmed hat | 2–4 cm | Strip, small circle |
On beanies, the label should not be taller than the cuff – leave at least 5 mm from the top and bottom edges of the turn-up. Round and oval labels sit better on a curved surface, because they have no corners to lift.
Material by type of hat
- Faux leather – thin, flexible and light. It follows the curve of the knit and does not weigh it down. Suitable for hats that are washed.
- Soft genuine leather – a premium look, pleasant to the touch. Choose a thinner version so it is not stiff.
- Firmer leather or jacron – for baseball caps, where the front panel is reinforced and the label sits flat.
Avoid thick, stiff leather on knitwear – its weight pulls the cuff down and the label sticks out.
Marking the logo on a small label
With small labels, the technique is especially important because the area is limited:
- Debossing – classic and durable, but requires a simplified logo with thicker lines.
- Laser engraving – best for small sizes and fine details.
- Foil – for a contrasting logo on dark leather, for example silver on black.
For hats, a simplified version of the logo is often used – just a symbol or monogram, without long text.
How to sew a label onto a beanie
- Order the label with punched holes around the outline – this makes hand sewing quick and even.
- Determine the position with the cuff folded – the label is sewn only to the outer layer of the cuff, so the inner layer is not caught.
- Back it with a thin backing or interfacing if the knit is loose – this way the stitching will not pull through.
- Sew with moderate tension – the knit must stay stretchy.
- Tie off the threads on the inside and trim them short.
In series production, the label can be machine-sewn onto the flat piece before the hat is closed at the back seam. This is faster and allows precise positioning on every hat.
How to attach a label to a baseball cap
On baseball caps, the label is almost always sewn onto the front panel before the panels are stitched together. This way the machine works on a flat piece, and the stitching does not go through the reinforcing backing of the finished cap. If the cap has already been assembled, sewing is possible but requires a special machine or hand work.
Caring for hats with a leather label
- Beanies with a faux leather label are washed by hand or on a delicate programme at a low temperature.
- A genuine leather label does not like soaking – spot cleaning and a short hand wash are better.
- Dry flat, without a tumble dryer – this way both the knit and the label keep their shape.
Combinations with other labels
The leather patch is visible on the outside, but the composition and care information remains on an inside label. In hats, a small care and composition label or a woven label is sewn inside, often in the back seam. For an even more premium look, leather is combined with a metal emblem – see our metal logo plates, which can be mounted on a leather base.
Common mistakes with hat labels
- A label that is too large and "covers" the cuff.
- Stiff, thick leather that does not follow the curve of the hat.
- A logo with very small text that cannot be read at the small size.
- Stitching that catches both layers of the cuff, so it can no longer be unfolded.
- A label with sharp corners that lift and catch.
