Wire Hook and Eye Sizes – How to Choose a Hook for the Fabric

When choosing wire hook and eye sizes, you look at two things: the thickness of the wire and the length of the hook. The finest sets are for lingerie, silk and chiffon, the medium ones for dresses, blouses and skirts, and the larger ones for waistbands, dense wool fabrics and outerwear. The rule is simple: the thinner the fabric and the lower the strain, the smaller the hook you choose.

How wire hook and eye sizes are designated

Wire hooks have no single international numbering standard the way buttons have ligne. Each manufacturer uses its own numbering – for example No. 00, 0, 1, 2, 3 and up, with a higher number usually meaning a larger hook. So when ordering it is more reliable to give the actual parameters rather than just a number from another supplier:

  • wire thickness in millimetres – it determines the strength and how much the hook will be felt through the fabric;
  • hook length – from the base to the end of the curve;
  • base width – the distance between the two sewing loops;
  • type of eye – straight or round, because the eye also has a size and must fit the hook.

In the wire hooks and eyes category we stock sets in sizes from 0.6 to 2 mm, which covers almost all applications in womenswear and lingerie.

The three factors that determine the size

1. Thickness and weight of the fabric

On a fine fabric a large hook is heavy, pulls the fabric down and shows as a bump on the outside. On a dense fabric a small hook sinks into the material and is hard to fasten. Go by how many layers will be stitched through – main fabric, interfacing, lining – not just the fabric itself.

2. Load at the fastening point

Above the invisible zip of a fitted dress, the hook takes considerable strain when the wearer sits and bends. There it makes sense to choose a hook one number larger than for a loose neckline, where the fastening only holds the edges together.

3. Visibility

If the hook stays completely hidden under the overlap, the size is purely a matter of function. But if the eye is visible, for example on the back of a dress with an edge-to-edge closure, the smaller size looks more refined.

Chart: which size for which product

Product and fabricRecommended sizeNote
Lingerie, bodysuit, silk, chiffonFinestMinimal weight, does not show through
Blouse, shirt in thin cotton or viscoseFineUsually a round eye at the neckline

Skirt with a waistband in a light fabricMediumStraight eye with an overlap
Wool dress, suiting fabricMedium to largeMore layers in the stitching
Coat, cape, leatherLargeOften covered with thread in the colour of the fabric

For waistbands of trousers and skirts in denim or suiting fabric, where the load is constant, a wire hook is usually not enough. There flat hooks and bars are used, which are stamped from strip rather than bent from wire.

How to measure a hook you already use

If you want to replace a hook from an existing style, measure it with a calliper:

  1. The wire thickness – on the straight part, not on the curve.
  2. The overall length – from the outer edge of the loops to the tip of the curve.
  3. The base width – between the outer edges of the two loops.
  4. The inner opening of the eye – it should be slightly larger than the wire thickness of the hook.

The surest option is to send us a physical sample together with a piece of the fabric. That way we can compare the size directly and suggest the closest model.

Hook number and compatibility with the eye

The hook and eye are sold as a set because they only work as a pair. If you combine a hook of one size with an eye of another, two problems arise: with an eye that is too large the fastening slips during movement, and with one that is too small the hook does not engage fully and deforms the wire. In series production always order sets of the same size and colour, even when buying the eyes separately as spares.

Common mistakes when choosing the size

  • One size for the whole collection – convenient for the warehouse, but with a blouse and a coat from the same line the result is a compromise for both styles.
  • Choosing from a photo alone – in photos sizes are misleading; ask for a sample.
  • Ignoring the lining – with lining and interfacing the fabric becomes considerably thicker.
  • Weak thread for a large hook – a larger hook takes more load and requires a strong polyester sewing thread.
  • No reinforcement – even the right size will tear a thin fabric if the area is not interfaced.

Samples and test sewing

Before starting a run, sew two or three sizes onto a test piece of the real fabric with all its layers. Fasten and unfasten many times, sit down, bend over – and see whether the hook slips, whether it shows on the outside and whether the fabric around the loops puckers. This check takes minutes but saves reworking the whole batch.

Record the chosen size, colour and type of eye in the tech pack for the style. That way, with a repeat order or a change of factory, selection does not have to start from scratch, and each following season you will use a proven solution.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest size of wire hook and eye?
The finest wire hooks and eyes are made of wire of about 0.6 mm and are used for lingerie, silk, chiffon and thin blouses. They are barely felt through the fabric and do not weigh it down. Bear in mind that they take less load, so above the invisible zip of a fitted dress a larger size is usually preferred.
Is there a standard numbering for hooks?
There is no single international standard. Each manufacturer uses its own numbers, so No. 1 from one supplier may not match No. 1 from another. When ordering, it is safer to state the wire thickness, the hook length and the type of eye, or to send a physical sample for comparison.
What are large wire hooks and eyes and what are they used for?
Large wire hooks and eyes have a thicker wire and a longer curve. They are used on coats, capes, leather goods, dense wool dresses and waistbands, where the fastening has to bear more weight. They are often covered with thread in the colour of the fabric so that they look more discreet when they remain visible.
