Satin chair bows are most often made with ribbon from 38 to 100 mm wide – narrower for clean-lined Tiffany (Chiavari) chairs, wider for chairs with covers. One chair usually needs about 1.5–2.5 m of ribbon, depending on the backrest and the size of the bow. The most popular wedding colours are white, ecru, dusty rose, burgundy and sage green.
Where satin ribbon is used at a wedding
- Chairs – bows on the backrest or the cover, often combined with organza.
- Tables – runners, napkin bands, decoration for place cards.
- Bouquet and buttonholes – wrapping the stem of the bridal bouquet and securing buttonholes.
- Invitations and guest favours – thin bows of 3–10 mm, often with printed text.
- Car – wide ribbons along the bonnet and the door handles.
- Arches and photo corners – long, freely hanging ribbons and drapes.
Satin chair bows – width and ribbon usage
| Chair type | Recommended width | Approximate usage per chair |
|---|---|---|
| Metal or wooden chair without a cover | 38–50 mm | 1.2–1.8 m |
| Chair with a stretch cover | 50–70 mm | 1.5–2.2 m |
| Chair with a wide cover and a large bow | 100 mm and more | 2–2.5 m |
| Bench or sofa (at the end) | 50–100 mm | depending on the circumference |
These values are a guide. Measure the circumference of the backrest where the bow will go, add ribbon for the bow itself (6–8 times its span) and for the hanging tails. Tie one test bow on a real chair, untie it and measure it – then multiply by the number of chairs and add a reserve for mistakes.
How to tie a bow on a chair
- Wrap the ribbon around the backrest from back to front so that both ends come out at the back.
- Cross the ends and tie a single knot, pulling it tight without bunching the cover.
- Form a bow with two loops and even out their span.
- Let the tails hang at equal length and cut them at an angle or in a V.
For large numbers of chairs, decorators often use pre-tied bows fixed with an elastic or a hidden pin. This way installation at the venue takes minutes and all the bows look the same.
Satin on its own or with organza
The combination of satin and organza is a classic in wedding décor: organza gives volume and transparency, satin gives sheen and weight. The usual scheme is a wide organza underneath and a narrower satin ribbon on top in a contrasting or neighbouring tone. Satin on its own looks cleaner and more modern, especially in wide widths and muted colours.
Colours for wedding décor
- White satin bows – the classic choice; check that the white matches the tablecloths and covers, because optical white and warm white look different side by side.
- Ecru and champagne – warmer and softer, suitable for rustic and boho styles.
- Dusty rose and powder pink – romantic, combined with gold and greenery.
- Burgundy and dark green – autumn and winter weddings.
- Sage and mint – fresh spring and summer palettes.
Ask for samples of the ribbon and compare them with the tablecloths and flowers in daylight. Satin reflects light and looks lighter than in a photo.
Practical tips for decorators and venues
- Double-face ribbon – a must for tied chair bows; the back shows when the tails swing.
- Finished ends – seal them so that they withstand repeated use and transport.
- Reuse – polyester satin can be washed and ironed at a low temperature, so decorators use the same ribbons for many events.
- Same dye lot – order the ribbon for one event from one lot so that there is no difference in tone.
- Storage – wind the ribbons onto rolls or cardboard spools, not into balls, so they do not crease.
Satin ribbon for the bridal bouquet
The stem of the bouquet is wrapped with 25–40 mm satin ribbon to hide the stems and wire and let the bride hold the bouquet comfortably. Start at the top and work down, each turn overlapping the previous one by half, and secure the end with decorative pearl pins or a few stitches. If desired, leave two long tails hanging freely or tie a small bow. For the bouquet choose double-face ribbon – the tails turn over as the bride moves. The ribbon should be in the same tone as the chair bows or a neighbouring shade so that the décor is coherent.
Printed satin ribbon for weddings
Personalised ribbons with the names of the couple, the date or a short message are used for guest favours, bouquets and bottles. Gold and silver foil on white, ecru or burgundy ribbon are the most popular. Prepare the text in advance and check the spelling of the names – no correction is possible after printing. For small quantities with different names, thermal transfer is more flexible than foil.
How much ribbon to order for an event
Calculate the usage separately for each group – chairs, tables, bouquets, favours – and add up the quantities. Add a reserve of about one tenth for test bows, mistakes and replacing damaged ribbons on site. If you use two colours or two widths, calculate them separately. For recurring events, such as at banquet halls, it pays to order the ribbon in one go for the whole season.
