Waxed Cord – What It Is, What It Is Made Of and Where It Is Used

Waxed cord is a cotton or polyester cord treated with wax or a wax emulsion. The coating makes it stiffer, smoother and water-repellent, protects the ends from fraying and lets knots hold securely. It is used for hang tags, bags and leather goods, jewellery and bracelets, packaging and as a decorative cord on clothing. The usual thicknesses range from about 0.5 to 3 mm.

What waxed cord is and how it is made

The base is a braided or twisted cord of cotton or polyester. After production it passes through a bath or rollers with wax – beeswax, paraffin or synthetic – and is dried. The wax penetrates between the fibres and forms a thin layer on the surface. The result is a cord that:

  • is stiffer and holds its shape;
  • has a smooth surface with a slight sheen;
  • does not fray easily at the ends;
  • repels water and dirt;
  • passes easily through holes, beads and eyelets;
  • keeps knots tight without coming undone.

Where waxed cord is used

Hang tags and branding

Waxed cord is a classic way of attaching cardboard hang tags to clothing, bags and accessories. It looks more premium than a plastic tag fastener, does not cut the fabric and emphasises the natural or artisan style of the brand. It is often combined with a metal plate or a bead with a logo.

Bags and leather goods

It is used for the handles of small pouches, closing leather cases, tying wallets and decorative fringes. In leather goods, waxed cord works well because of its similar look and feel. For more accessories for this segment, see accessories for footwear and leather.

Clothing

Thin waxed cords are used for decorative ties at the necklines of shirts and tunics, for fringes and for details in boho and ethnic collections. Thicker versions appear as hood cords in premium and streetwear styles, where a clearer silhouette is wanted.

Jewellery and accessories

Bracelets, necklaces and pendants with beads – waxed cord is preferred because beads thread on easily and knots do not come undone.

Packaging

For tying gift boxes, pouches and parcels, especially for brands with a natural or eco look.

Waxed cord thicknesses

  • 0.5–1 mm – hang tags, jewellery, fine decorative details;
  • 1–2 mm – bracelets, packaging, decorative ties on clothing;
  • 2–3 mm – bags, leather goods, fringes, more visible details;
  • over 3 mm – hood cords and handles, less common.

How to choose waxed cord

  1. Define the application – a thin cord is enough for a hang tag, while a handle needs a strong polyester one.
  2. Check the degree of wax coating – a more heavily impregnated cord is stiffer and may leave marks on light materials.
  3. Choose a colour – natural, black, brown and navy are classics, but a wide range of colours is available.
  4. Think about the finish – aglet, knot, heat sealing or a metal element.
  5. Test with the hole – the cord must pass through the eyelet, bead or hang tag hole.

Care and limitations

Wax can soften at high temperatures and leave marks on light fabric. So waxed cord is not the best choice for items that are washed frequently at high temperatures or ironed in the cord area. On clothing, test how the cord behaves in the wash before production. With hang tags this is not a problem, because they are removed before wearing.

Waxed cord in a branding kit

Many brands use waxed cord as part of their recognisable product packaging. A typical kit includes a cardboard hang tag with logo, a waxed cord in the corporate colour and a small metal element – a plate, ring or bead with an engraved mark. The cord can be supplied cut to a set length and finished with a knot or aglet, which speeds up tagging in production. When planning such a kit, specify the loop length, how it attaches to the product and whether the tags will be attached by hand or by machine.

Waxed cord or an alternative

  • Satin cord – softer and shinier, for luxury and evening accessories.
  • Leather cord – natural look, but more expensive and sensitive to moisture.
  • Ordinary braided polyester cord – softer, without a wax coating, for clothing that is washed frequently.
  • Plastic tag fastener – the fastest and most economical solution for mass-market hang tags.

Common mistakes

  • Cord too thick for the hang tag hole – hard to thread on the packing line.
  • Dark waxed cord on white clothing – possible wax marks.
  • Waxed cotton cord for load-bearing handles – it wears out faster.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is waxed cord used for?
Waxed cord is used for attaching hang tags to clothing and accessories, for bags and leather goods, jewellery and bracelets, decorative ties on clothing and packaging. The wax makes it smooth and water-repellent, protects the ends from fraying and keeps knots tight. That is why it is preferred wherever a natural, premium look is wanted.
Which cords are used for jewellery?
For bracelets and necklaces, thin waxed cords of about 0.5–2 mm, in polyester or cotton, are most common, as well as leather and satin cords. Waxed cord is convenient because beads thread on easily and knots do not come undone. The polyester version is stronger and more resistant to moisture.
Can waxed cord be washed?
Waxed cord tolerates gentle washing, but the wax gradually decreases and may soften at high temperatures. If it is part of a garment, test it in the wash and check that it does not leave marks on light fabrics. With hang tags this is not a problem, because they are removed before wearing.
Cotton or polyester cords – which are stronger?
Polyester cords are stronger, more resistant to abrasion and moisture and do not shrink in the wash. Cotton cords are softer, with a natural matt look, but they shrink and wear faster. For load-bearing handles, bags and outdoor products choose polyester, and for natural and eco collections, cotton.
