Hook and loop tape – fast, reliable fastening

Hook and loop tape (often called Velcro) consists of two parts: a tape with small stiff hooks and a tape with a soft pile of loops. When pressed together, the hooks catch in the loops and form a strong yet easily separable bond. This makes hook and loop one of the most practical fastenings – it opens and closes in one movement, without buttons, zips or ties.

Variants of hook and loop tape

Standard hook and loop tape is sew-on and is used in most textile products. There are also softer versions for clothing and products in contact with the skin, stiffer and stronger tapes for bags and equipment, and back-to-back hook and loop, where hooks and loops are on the same tape – handy for cable ties and securing straps. Colours and quality

Besides black and white, hook and loop tape can be produced in virtually any colour – to Pantone or to a sample – to blend in with the fabric or become a visible accent. Quality hook and loop keeps its grip through repeated opening and closing, does not fray at the edges and is resistant to washing and different weather conditions. It is attached with a straight or zigzag stitch around the edge of the tape.

Tips for choosing

For childrenswear and children's shoes, choose a softer loop side that does not irritate the skin and a width of 16–25 mm. For heavy bags and equipment under load, use a wider tape and a larger contact area. For garments that are washed often, it is best to close the hook and loop before washing so it does not catch other fabrics.
