Material
This button is made from corozo – the hard kernel of the tagua palm seed, which grows in the rainforests of South America and is known as "vegetable ivory" for its density and colour. Each button has its own fine grain from the natural veining of the kernel, so no two are exactly alike – a sign of a natural material, not a defect. Saturated colours soak into the material and look softer and more natural on corozo than on a plastic button of the same shade.
Colour and pairing
A purple button is suitable for women's coats, jackets, dresses and knitwear. Tip: purple combines well with grey, black and cream; on purple fabric choose a slightly darker shade.
Design and details
The raised rim frames the face, protects the thread in the holes from abrasion and gives the button a classic, finished profile. The extra-thick body gives a more pronounced profile and a more solid feel in the hand – ideal for coats, jackets and heavy fabrics.
Choosing the size
Outerwear usually takes a 40L (25 mm) button; 32L–36L (20–22 mm) suits lighter jackets, and 44L–48L (28–30 mm) large coats.
Sewing on and buttonholes
With four holes the button is firmly attached – suitable for areas under strain such as the front of a jacket or coat or a trouser waistband; the stitching can be crossed or parallel. For coats and heavy fabrics, leave a 2–3 mm thread shank between the button and the fabric – that way the button fastens easily and the fabric does not pucker. Before cutting the buttonholes, make a test – as a guide: 36L (22 mm) – approx. 25–27 mm; 40L (25 mm) – approx. 28–30 mm; 44L (28 mm) – approx. 31–33 mm.
Frequently asked questions
Can corozo be washed?
Corozo buttons withstand washing and dry cleaning. Avoid chlorine bleach and prolonged soaking in hot water, and when ironing do not press the iron directly onto the button.
Can the button be dyed in a different colour?
Yes – corozo can be dyed to a sample or to Pantone on request, so CRZ 0003 can be made in the shade of your fabric.
