The main metal zip finishes, which determine the colour and shine of the teeth and slider, are: natural brass, nickel, silver, gold, antique brass, bronze, black nickel, gunmetal, matt and satin versions, and painted teeth. A separate category is polished zips, where each tooth is smoothed to a sleek, shiny surface and the slider glides especially easily.
Why the finish of a metal zip matters
The zip is often the largest metal surface on a garment or bag. It has to match the buttons, eyelets, rivets, rings and logo plates, and the finish has to withstand washing, friction and time. That is why choosing a finish is as much a technical question as an aesthetic one.
Main metal zip finishes
| Finish | Look | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Natural brass | Warm yellow, develops a patina | Jeans, workwear, vintage |
| Nickel / silver | Light, cool, shiny | Jackets, bags, modern designs |
| Gold / light gold | Brilliant, luxurious | Women's handbags, formalwear |
| Antique brass | Darkened brass with rubbed light edges | Denim, leather jackets, vintage collections |
| Bronze / copper | Warm brownish or reddish | Denim, leather, autumn palettes |
| Black nickel | Dark, shiny, almost black | Minimalist and dark collections |
| Gunmetal | Dark grey metallic | Men's jackets, bags, smart-casual designs |
| Matt / satin | No mirror shine | Designs where the metal should be discreet |
| Painted / enamel | Colour of your choice | Fashion accents, children's clothing, tone-on-tone with the fabric |
Antique finishes – how they are produced
The antique effect is achieved by first darkening the metal chemically (oxidising it) and then mechanically rubbing the raised parts. This leaves the edges of the teeth lighter and the recesses dark. The result resembles metal worn over the years and goes very well with denim, genuine leather and rugged fabrics. Antique brass, antique silver and antique copper are among the most popular finishes for jeans.
Polished metal zips
On a standard metal zip, the teeth are stamped and clamped onto the tape without any further surface treatment. On polished zips, each tooth undergoes additional smoothing, after which the edges are rounded, the surface is mirror-smooth and the slider runs much more smoothly and quietly. Such zips are used on luxury leather goods and high-end jackets and bags where the zip is a visible accent.
- Advantages – smoother running, a more refined look, less catching on fabric and leather.
- Disadvantages – higher price and a longer production process.
Some brands, such as YKK, have separate lines of polished metal zips for high-end products.
Finish of the slider and the teeth
The slider is usually made of zinc alloy, while the teeth are brass, nickel-plated alloy or aluminium. Different metals take a finish differently, so even with the same finish there may be a slight difference in tone. For designs where this matters, ask for a sample from exactly the same batch and compare in daylight.
Combinations are also possible – for example natural brass teeth with an antique slider, or black nickel teeth with a matt slider. Such combinations are agreed in advance.
Wash resistance of finishes
Every finish is a thin layer over the base metal and can wear off. The most vulnerable are:
- Painted and enamelled teeth – with friction and industrial stone washing, the paint can chip at the edges.
- Black nickel and gunmetal – with aggressive bleaching, the edges can lighten.
- Natural brass – darkens and can leave marks on light fabric with prolonged moisture.
If the garment goes through stone wash, enzyme wash, bleaching or garment dyeing, test a zip sample with the actual recipe. Lacquered finishes, which are more resistant to oxidation, are sometimes used.
Finish and tape colour – good combinations
The metal is always seen together with the tape, so the combination of the two is part of the design. Some proven pairings:
- Antique brass with navy or natural tape – the classic look of jeans.
- Nickel with black or graphite tape – a clean, modern look for jackets and bags.
- Light gold with beige, cream or black tape – women's leather handbags and formal designs.
- Black nickel with black tape – tone-on-tone, the zip almost disappears into dark fabric.
- Bronze with brown or olive tape – autumn palettes and genuine leather.
With contrasting combinations, for example light teeth on dark tape, the zip becomes a visible accent, so the quality of the finish and consistency of tone are particularly important there.
How to choose a finish
- Start from the rest of the hardware – the metal buttons, eyelets and buckles.
- Think about the fabric – antique and bronze look good on denim and leather, nickel and black nickel on smooth technical fabrics.
- Take the processing into account – the more aggressive the wash, the more durable the finish needs to be.
- Send a physical sample – a screen does not reproduce metallic tones accurately.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a finish from a photo instead of a physical sample.
- Different suppliers for the zip and the buttons without a shared reference sample.
- Painted teeth on a garment that goes through stone washing.
- Ignoring the difference in tone between the slider and the chain.
