Material

Corozo combines hardness, the ability to be finely turned and excellent dye uptake, which is why it is used for buttons on quality shirts, suits and coats. Each button has its own fine grain from the natural veining of the kernel, so no two are exactly alike – a sign of a natural material, not a defect. In light shades the corozo grain shows most clearly – the dye accentuates it rather than hiding it.

Colour and pairing

A tan button is typical of sports jackets, tweed and suede jackets, camel coats and knitted cardigans. Tan is a warm earthy tone, close to the colour of natural leather, camel wool and caramel.

Outerwear usually takes a 40L (25 mm) button; 32L–36L (20–22 mm) suits lighter jackets, and 44L–48L (28–30 mm) large coats. On knitwear the button should match the weight of the knit – 24L–28L (15–18 mm) for chunky cardigans and 16L–20L (10–12.5 mm) for fine knits and blouses.

Sewing on and buttonholes

Four holes give a choice between cross and parallel stitching – a firmer hold in areas under strain. For thick fabrics, wind the thread several times under the button to form a shank – this protects the buttonhole and makes fastening easier. Before cutting the buttonholes, make a test – as a guide: 16L (10 mm) – approx. 12–13 mm; 36L (22 mm) – approx. 24–25 mm; 44L (28 mm) – approx. 30–31 mm.
