Custom care and composition labels are made to your data: fibre composition, care symbols, languages, origin and logo. For a fast and accurate quote, prepare a table with all the articles and their data, choose the material and size, and state the quantities. A sample is then made, and after it is approved, the series.
Custom care and composition labels – what they include
The care and composition label carries information that stays in the garment throughout its life. When ordering to your data, you can specify:
- The logo or brand name, usually at the top.
- Fibre composition in one or more languages.
- The five care symbols according to ISO 3758.
- Text washing instructions.
- Country of origin.
- Article number, season, batch or size.
- The manufacturer's name and contact address, if you want these details on the product.
Step 1: prepare the data as a table
The most common source of errors is manual retyping. That is why it is better to prepare the data as a table in which each row is a separate label variant.
| Column | Example |
|---|---|
| Article | Shirt 2041 |
| Composition | 97% cotton, 3% elastane |
| Symbols | 40 with one bar; do not bleach; tumble dry one dot; iron two dots; P |
| Languages | BG, EN, RO, GR |
| Text instructions | Wash separately |
| Origin | Made in Bulgaria |
| Quantity | According to the series |
If you also have sizes, each size can be a separate row or a separate column. This way the label manufacturer prints each variant in the exact quantity.
Step 2: choose the material and size
Material
- Satin – soft and smooth, for lingerie, children's clothing, blouses and anything that touches the skin.
- Taffeta – stiffer and more economical, for outerwear and mass production.
- Cotton tape – for organic and eco collections.
- Non-woven fabric – for home textiles and bed linen.
Size and folding
The width depends on the amount of text and on where the label will be sewn. The length is determined by the number of languages and lines. Multilingual labels are made with several pages – the strips are folded and sewn in together. Also specify the delivery format: cut and folded labels, or a roll if the factory cuts them itself.
Tape and print colour
Care and composition labels are most often white or cream with black print, because this makes the text most legible. Brands that care about a consistent style choose tape in the colour of the main label – black, navy or beige – and print in a contrasting colour. It is important that the contrast remains sufficient: light grey text on white tape looks elegant on the sample, but after a few washes it can become hard to read.
Step 3: checking the text
Before the sample, the text is checked for:
- the official fibre names in all languages;
- percentages adding up to 100% and listed in descending order;
- symbols consistent with the fabric and accessories;
- no contradiction between the text and the symbols;
- font legibility at the chosen size.
Who is responsible for the label content
Responsibility for the accuracy of the composition and instructions lies with the brand or garment manufacturer placing the product on the market. The label manufacturer prints the text provided and can help check the format, names and layout, but cannot know the actual composition of your fabric. The data must therefore come from the fabric supplier's specification or a laboratory analysis. Keep these documents – they are useful for questions from customers, retail chains or market surveillance.
Step 4: sample and approval
The sample shows what the label looks like at actual size and in the actual material. It is a good idea to sew it onto a sample garment, wash it and check whether the text stays legible, whether the edges are soft and whether the label irritates the skin. Series production begins after approval.
Step 5: series production and delivery
The series order is produced according to the approved sample. If you have many variants, they are packed and marked separately to avoid confusion in the factory. Minimum quantities depend on the article – send an inquiry and you will receive exact information.
What affects the price
The price of custom care and composition labels depends on several factors. For a specific figure a request for a quote is needed, but it is useful to know what determines it:
- the material – satin, taffeta, cotton or non-woven;
- the size and number of pages;
- the number of print colours;
- the number of variants (articles, sizes, languages);
- the quantity of each variant;
- the delivery format – cut, folded or on a roll.
Care label and main label as a set
Many brands order the care and composition label together with the brand's main label – woven or printed – in the same width and colour. That way the two labels look like one unit when sewn in together. Browse our printed labels and the whole labels category. Common ordering mistakes
- Sending the text as a photo instead of an editable file.
- A missing language or translation.
- One label for articles with different compositions.
- Approving a sample without a wash test.
- Unclear quantities per variant.
