Types of Corozo Buttons – with Holes, Shank, Rim and Profile

Polkom
Видове корозо копчета – с дупки, с краче, с ръб и с профил

Types of corozo buttons are classified by four criteria: attachment method (two or four holes, shank), profile (flat, rimmed, domed, concave), finish (natural, matt, satin, polished) and decoration (engraving, relief, logo, natural bark). The combination of these characteristics determines whether the button will be a discreet detail on a shirt or a striking accent on a coat.

Types of corozo buttons by attachment

Four-hole buttons

The most classic type for men's shirts, jackets and suits. The four holes distribute the load and allow different stitch patterns – with parallel threads, crosswise or with a decorative stitch in a contrasting colour. The button sits steadily on the fabric and does not tilt.

Two-hole buttons

A cleaner look, often used on knitwear, blouses, dresses and minimalist collections. They are suitable when the face should be calmer or when the button is small.

Shank buttons

The shank is a protruding part with a hole on the back of the button. This leaves the face completely smooth and suitable for a logo or relief. A shank button "stands" above the fabric, which makes it suitable for thick materials – coats, knitwear, wool jackets – and for decorative designs. With corozo, the shank can be cut from the same material, or the button can be combined with a metal shank.

Types by profile

Profile Description Suitable for
Flat Thin button with a level surface Shirts, blouses, delicate fabrics
Rimmed Raised edge around the periphery, recessed centre with the holes Jackets, suits, coats – the classic tailoring style
Domed Convex face Knitwear, coats, casual jackets
Concave Cup-shaped Shirts and jackets with a modern look
Shaped Milled grooves, facets, geometric forms Designer and womenswear styles

The rimmed profile is the most common in classic menswear, because the rim protects the thread from friction and gives a finished look. You will find more in our men's buttons section.

Types by finish

  • Natural – keeps the creamy colour of the nut, with visible veining. Suitable for linen, cotton, raw wool and collections in natural tones.
  • Matt – a soft, velvety feel without glare. Preferred for formal suits and dark colours.
  • Satin – a slight sheen that brings out the pattern without being obtrusive. A versatile choice.
  • Polished – a smooth, shiny surface and a richer colour. Suitable for eveningwear and eye-catching designs.
  • Two-tone – a dyed button whose rim or relief is sanded back to the natural colour to create contrast.

Types by decoration

Engraved buttons

A laser applies a logo, monogram, lettering or ornament. On dyed corozo buttons the engraving reveals the lighter core and is clearly visible without additional paint. See also our engraved buttons for more ideas.

Relief buttons

Geometric or floral motifs are cut by milling. The effect is tactile and suits thicker buttons for coats and knitwear.

Buttons with natural bark

Some models keep part of the outer layer of the nut on the edge or the back. This way the button shows its origin and has a distinctly natural, handcrafted look.

Buttons with inlay or metal combination

Corozo can be combined with a metal ring or shank. Such models are less common and are used in designer collections.

Which type of corozo button for which garment

  • Classic shirt: four holes, flat or slightly concave profile, 16L–18L, natural or matching the fabric.
  • Suit and jacket: four holes with rim, matt or satin finish, 30L–32L on the front and 24L on the sleeve.
  • Coat: four holes with rim or a shank, thicker profile, 36L and up.
  • Knitted cardigan: two or four holes, domed profile or shank, dyed to a sample.
  • Linen garment: natural corozo, two or four holes, with visible pattern.
  • Designer piece: shaped profile, two-tone finish or relief.

Sewing on by type

The type of button also determines how it is sewn on in the factory. Hole buttons are sewn with an automatic button-sewing machine; on thick fabrics a thread shank is left so there is room for the fabric around the buttonhole. Shank buttons are sewn through the hole in the shank, and on heavy coats they are often reinforced with a small inside button on the reverse. Shaped and relief models require careful machine setup so the surface is not scratched.

What to watch out for when choosing

A thick shank button requires a wider buttonhole and a denser fabric. Shaped and domed profiles can catch on chunky knits. Polished dark buttons show scratches more easily, while matt ones show fingerprints in light colours. So always try the sample in real conditions: button and unbutton the garment several times, check how the button sits on the fabric and under what light it will be sold.

How to describe the model in your inquiry

A well-described inquiry saves at least one round of samples. State the attachment type, profile, size in ligne, finish, colour (natural or to a sample) and whether you need a logo. If you have a sample button or a photo from a previous collection, attach them. For natural alternatives with a different texture, also take a look at our wooden buttons.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which is better – a corozo button with holes or with a shank?
It depends on the garment and the fabric. Hole buttons are the classic choice for shirts, jackets and suits because they lie flat on the fabric and are quick to sew on. Shank buttons are better suited to thick materials, knitwear and coats, and when the face should be free for a logo or relief. With them, the buttonhole is usually slightly wider.
Should I choose matt or polished corozo buttons for a suit?
For classic business suits, a matt or satin finish is most often chosen because it looks elegant and discreet. Polished buttons are better suited to eveningwear, tuxedos or designs where the button should be a visible accent. If you are not sure, ask for samples in both finishes and compare them on the fabric in daylight.
Can a corozo button be made to my own design?
Yes, corozo allows a specific profile, shape, finish and engraving to be made to your design. Send a drawing, photo or sample button along with the desired size and colour. Once the details are clarified, a sample is made for approval. The possibilities depend on the size of the tagua nut, so very large and very thick models are discussed individually.
