Material

The corozo used for this button is the dried kernel of the tagua nut – a plant material with a density and sheen close to ivory, yet entirely natural in origin. Because the material is plant-based, the vein pattern varies from button to button and gives the garment a lively, understated character. In dark shades the dye penetrates the material deeply, the surface looks more even and the veins are noticeable only up close.

Colour and pairing

In black the button suits almost any dark fabric – wool broadcloth, gabardine, denim and knitwear – and is a safe choice when a collection includes many colours. On navy or graphite a black button looks more formal than a button matching the fabric – well suited to formalwear.

Design and details

The button has no rim – a clean profile that sits unobtrusively on the fabric. Double turning creates a two-level profile that catches the light along the edge and highlights the natural structure of the corozo.

Choosing the size

Outerwear usually takes a 40L (25 mm) button; 32L–36L (20–22 mm) suits lighter jackets, and 44L–48L (28–30 mm) large coats. On knitwear the button should match the weight of the knit – 24L–28L (15–18 mm) for chunky cardigans and 16L–20L (10–12.5 mm) for fine knits and blouses.

Sewing on and buttonholes

With a two-hole button the stitching runs in a single line – a clean look and quick machine sewing. For coats and heavy fabrics, leave a 2–3 mm thread shank between the button and the fabric – that way the button fastens easily and the fabric does not pucker. The buttonhole length is roughly the button diameter plus its thickness: 16L (10 mm) – approx. 12–13 mm; 36L (22 mm) – approx. 24–25 mm; 44L (28 mm) – approx. 30–31 mm.

Frequently asked questions

What does L mean in a button size?
L (ligne) is the traditional unit for button diameter: 1L ≈ 0.635 mm, so 40L ≈ 25 mm. For CRZ 0250, for example, 14L corresponds to 9 mm.

Can corozo be washed?
Corozo buttons withstand washing and dry cleaning. Avoid chlorine bleach and prolonged soaking in hot water, and when ironing do not press the iron directly onto the button.
