Material

Corozo combines hardness, the ability to be finely turned and excellent dye uptake, which is why it is used for buttons on quality shirts, suits and coats. The material is biodegradable, and its natural pattern makes every button unique. In a light colour the natural structure of corozo is plainly visible and gives the button a soft, warm look.

Colour and pairing

Tan buttons add warmth to beige, olive and blue garments and are a popular choice for flannel shirts and summer jackets. Tan looks good on navy, olive and grey fabric – it gives a warm contrast without being loud.

Design and details

The rim around the edge makes the button look fuller and protects the thread from wear – a classic shape for jackets, coats and trousers.

Choosing the size

On shirts, 18L (11.5 mm) is the standard for the placket, 14L–16L (9–10 mm) for button-down collars and cuffs, and 20L (12.5 mm) for heavier flannel and denim shirts. On a men's suit the classic combination is 32L (20 mm) for the jacket front and 24L (15 mm) for the sleeves; a waistcoat takes 24L–28L (15–18 mm).

Sewing on and buttonholes

Four holes spread the load and hold the button more securely; it can be sewn with a cross stitch (X) or two parallel stitches (=). The buttonhole length is roughly the button diameter plus its thickness: 14L (9 mm) – approx. 11–12 mm; 24L (15 mm) – approx. 17–18 mm; 32L (20 mm) – approx. 22–23 mm.
