Material

The corozo used for this button is the dried kernel of the tagua nut – a plant material with a density and sheen close to ivory, yet entirely natural in origin. Because the material is plant-based, the vein pattern varies from button to button and gives the garment a lively, understated character. In light shades the corozo grain shows most clearly – the dye accentuates it rather than hiding it.

Colour and pairing

A tan button is typical of sports jackets, tweed and suede jackets, camel coats and knitted cardigans. Tip: pair a tan button with brown leather details – a belt, shoes or leather elbow patches – for a finished look.

Design and details

The raised rim frames the face, protects the thread in the holes from abrasion and gives the button a classic, finished profile. The recessed canal on the face holds the thread and protects it from friction during wear. The extra-thick body gives a more pronounced profile and a more solid feel in the hand – ideal for coats, jackets and heavy fabrics.

Choosing the size

Outerwear usually takes a 40L (25 mm) button; 32L–36L (20–22 mm) suits lighter jackets, and 44L–48L (28–30 mm) large coats.

Sewing on and buttonholes

With four holes the button is firmly attached – suitable for areas under strain such as the front of a jacket or coat or a trouser waistband; the stitching can be crossed or parallel. For coats and heavy fabrics, leave a 2–3 mm thread shank between the button and the fabric – that way the button fastens easily and the fabric does not pucker. The buttonhole length is roughly the button diameter plus its thickness: 36L (22 mm) – approx. 25–27 mm; 40L (25 mm) – approx. 28–30 mm; 44L (28 mm) – approx. 31–33 mm.

Frequently asked questions

What does L mean in a button size?
L (ligne) is the traditional unit for button diameter: 1L ≈ 0.635 mm, so 40L ≈ 25 mm. For CRZ 0603, for example, 16L corresponds to 10 mm.

Are all buttons in a batch identical?
Shape and size are identical, but the vein pattern differs on every button – that is what natural corozo looks like.
