Material
Corozo combines hardness, the ability to be finely turned and excellent dye uptake, which is why it is used for buttons on quality shirts, suits and coats. Because the material is plant-based, the vein pattern varies from button to button and gives the garment a lively, understated character. In dark shades the dye penetrates the material deeply, the surface looks more even and the veins are noticeable only up close.
Colour and pairing
In black the button suits almost any dark fabric – wool broadcloth, gabardine, denim and knitwear – and is a safe choice when a collection includes many colours. If you are sewing with black fabric, compare the button with the fabric in daylight: the blacks of different materials vary slightly in sheen.
Design and details
The raised rim frames the face, protects the thread in the holes from abrasion and gives the button a classic, finished profile.
Choosing the size
For shirts and polos, 16L (10 mm) and 18L (11.5 mm) are most common on the front placket, with 14L (9 mm) for the collar and cuffs. For children's clothing, 18L–24L (11.5–15 mm) is the most common choice – large enough to fasten easily.
Sewing on and buttonholes
On a button with special holes the stitching is visible and decorative – choose a matching or contrasting thread depending on the effect you want. The buttonhole length is roughly the button diameter plus its thickness: 14L (9 mm) – approx. 11–12 mm; 18L (11.5 mm) – approx. 13.5–14.5 mm; 24L (15 mm) – approx. 17–18 mm.
