Sewing on and buttonholes

With four holes the button is firmly attached – suitable for areas under strain such as the front of a jacket or coat or a trouser waistband; the stitching can be crossed or parallel. For coats and heavy fabrics, leave a 2–3 mm thread shank between the button and the fabric – that way the button fastens easily and the fabric does not pucker. Guide to buttonhole length (diameter plus button thickness): 40L (25 mm) – approx. 27–28 mm. Make a test on the same fabric.
