Material

Polyester is the most widely used button material in series garment production: it is light and strong and reproduces shape and colour accurately. It keeps its shape and shine through washing and ironing, so the buttons look the same even after repeated use. The finish is glossy: the button looks lustrous and deep, and the colour appears richer.

Colour and pairing

A brown button is a classic for coats, tweed jackets, wool cardigans and trousers in autumn shades. Tip: a brown button softens navy and grey clothing and is a more casual alternative to black.

Choosing the size

Available sizes and what they are most often used for:

  • 28L (18 mm) – women's jackets, cardigans and waistcoats
  • 32L (20 mm) – the front of men's jackets and suits
  • 44L (28 mm) – heavy winter coats and statement buttons

Sewing on and buttonholes

With a two-hole button the stitching runs in a single line – a clean look and quick machine sewing. For coats and heavy fabrics, leave a 2–3 mm thread shank between the button and the fabric – that way the button fastens easily and the fabric does not pucker. Before cutting the buttonholes, make a test – as a guide: 28L (18 mm) – approx. 20–21 mm; 32L (20 mm) – approx. 22–23 mm; 44L (28 mm) – approx. 30–31 mm.
