Accessories for Collars and Leashes – Buckles, Rings and D-Rings

Dog collar buckles are selected based on the dog’s size, strap width and usage: plastic snap buckles are lightweight and convenient for everyday collars, metal buckles and tongue buckles are for larger, stronger dogs, and the D-ring where the leash attaches must be welded or cast to withstand sudden pulling. Additional components include leash carabiners, length adjusters and straps resistant to water and abrasion.

The pet industry as a haberdashery customer

Collars, leashes, harnesses and car safety belts for pets are made from the same components as backpacks and bags: technical tapes, buckles, rings, carabiners and adjusters. However, the load differs. Dogs pull suddenly, often at an angle, and the product is constantly outdoors – exposed to rain, mud, snow and saltwater. That is why manufacturers of pet accessories choose components more carefully than fashion brands.

Plastic buckles made of polyacetal (POM) are the standard for everyday collars and harnesses. See the types in plastic buckles – snap, adjusters and strap end fasteners. For large breeds and premium leather collars, metal tongue or snap buckles are used.

Rings: where the leash attaches

The ring is the most stressed part of the collar – it bears the full force when the dog pulls. Therefore:

  • D-ring is the standard. The straight side holds the strap flat, the rounded side is for the leash carabiner.
  • Welded ring made of wire is stronger than unwelded. An unwelded ring’s seam can open under sudden pull.
  • Cast ring made of zinc alloy has no seam and offers a smooth, premium look, ideal for leather collars.
  • Round O-ring is used on harnesses where straps meet from several directions.

The inner width of the ring should be equal to or slightly larger than the strap width. See rings in various shapes and finishes.

Leash carabiners

The carabiner connects the leash to the collar ring. When choosing, consider:

  1. Swivel ring – prevents leash twisting when the dog moves around.
  2. Strong spring on the latch – should not open under pressure from the ring.
  3. Carabiner ring size – matches the leash strap width.
  4. Weight – heavy carabiners are uncomfortable for small dogs and strain their necks.

See models in carabiners and hooks.

Metal rings and corrosion

Pet accessories get wet constantly – walks in rain, swimming in the sea, bathing. Corrosion is the main cause of complaints. How to avoid it:

  • Choose materials and plating suitable for wet environments;
  • For dogs swimming in saltwater, include saltwater testing;
  • Avoid cheap platings that peel and leave rust stains on straps and fur;
  • Combine metal parts with fast-drying straps – polyester or polyamide.

All Polkom metal products are nickel free, important for items frequently touched by people.

Strap and adjustment

The collar strap must be dense, non-stretching and not fray at the edges. Polyester and polyamide technical tapes are most common. The three-bar adjuster allows length changes without sewing – convenient for growing puppies. The strap’s free end is fixed with a small stopper to prevent dangling. Strap width and the openings of all buckles and rings must match – it is easier to order straps and accessories together.

Strap width by dog size

Width determines the size of all accessories. Approximately, small breeds and puppies wear collars with 10–15 mm straps, medium breeds 20–25 mm, and large breeds 30–40 mm or more. Harness straps are similar but load distributes across the chest, so rings and buckles can be slightly lighter. Design your range in several widths with the same buckle and ring models – the collection looks unified and orders consolidate.

Branding pet accessories

Pet brands use accessories to stand out on the shelf:

  • Snap buckle in brand colour with embossed logo;
  • Metal buckle or ring with engraved logo;
  • Carabiner with logo on the body;
  • Woven or leather label on the collar;
  • Jacquard tape with brand name.

Rings and buckles: tests before production

  1. Tensile – simulates sudden leash pulling.
  2. Repeated opening and closing of buckles.
  3. Water and saltwater – corrosion and colour change.
  4. Cold – behaviour of plastic buckles at subzero temperatures.
  5. UV – fading of strap and plastic.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Plastic or metal buckle for a dog collar?
For small and medium dogs and everyday collars, plastic snap buckles are light, rust-free and open with one hand. For large and strong dogs or premium leather collars, metal buckles or tongue buckles are more secure. The dog’s size, strap and usage determine the choice.
Why must the D-ring on a collar be welded?
The D-ring bears the full force when the dog pulls the leash. An unwelded ring made of bent wire has an open seam that can open under sudden load. Welded or cast zinc alloy rings have no weak points. That is why collars and harnesses use them.
Can a collar buckle have a logo?
Yes. Plastic snap buckles can have embossed logos and custom colours, while metal buckles, rings and carabiners can have engraved or embossed logos and plating options. A branded buckle is a visible element that distinguishes the brand on the shelf. Send your logo and strap width when inquiring.
