A genuine YKK zip is recognised by several signs at once: a clear, deeply stamped YKK marking on the slider, teeth of identical shape and spacing, smooth running without snagging, and a traceable source with batch documents. None of these signs alone is proof – fakes copy the logo, but rarely manage to copy the consistency of quality. Below is the checklist we use when inspecting metal zips.
Why fake YKK zips exist at all
YKK is a Japanese manufacturer and the most recognisable zip brand in the world. The marking on the slider tells the buyer the brand did not cut corners on trims, and that is exactly why cheap copies imitate it. For a garment factory the risk is twofold: on the one hand complaints from broken teeth or a jamming slider, on the other a problem with the brand if the tech pack specifies genuine YKK but a different zip has been sewn in.
With metal zips fakes are particularly common, because denim and leather jackets are the segments where the buyer looks at the slider first. So every manufacturer should know what a genuine YKK metal zip looks like up close.
How to recognise a genuine YKK zip – checklist
1. The slider marking
On a genuine zip the YKK marking is raised or stamped, with sharp, even edges. The letters are centred and of equal depth. On copies the marking is often shallow, blurred, slightly off-centre or looks printed rather than forged into the metal. Turn the slider over – on the back of the body many styles carry an additional marking for the slider size and type.
2. The teeth
YKK metal teeth have the same shape, height and pitch along the entire length. Look at the closed zip from the side: the chain should be straight, with no teeth sticking out or tilted. On the premium Excella line every tooth is polished and the closed chain looks like a solid strip of metal.
3. How the teeth grip the tape
The teeth must be clamped tightly around the corded edge of the tape. If a tooth moves when pressed with a fingernail, or there is a visible gap between two teeth, the zip is suspect – and regardless of the brand, such a zip will fall apart in use.
4. Slider movement
A genuine slider moves with even effort from start to finish, without "steps" and without a scraping sound. On auto-lock sliders the lock should engage securely when the puller is down and release as soon as you lift it.
5. Stops and tape
The top and bottom stops are symmetrical and well crimped. The tape is densely woven, with an even edge, no loose threads and a uniform colour throughout the batch. If the colour was ordered by number from the YKK colour card, compare the tape with the card in daylight.
Comparison: genuine versus a typical copy
| Feature | Genuine YKK | Typical copy |
|---|---|---|
| YKK marking | Deep, sharp, centred | Shallow, blurred, off-centre |
| Teeth | Same shape and pitch | Different heights, tilted teeth |
| Slider | Even effort, secure lock | Snags, loose, weak lock |
| Finish | Same tone throughout the batch | Stains, differences between pieces |
| Documents | Traceable source and specification | No origin, "YKK type" |
Beware of the phrase "YKK type"
In the trade you often see wording like "YKK-type zip" or "YKK quality". This usually means a zip that looks like YKK but is not made by YKK. Such a zip may be perfectly good for a particular product, but it must not be sold or described as genuine. If your brand has no brand requirement, it is more honest and more economical to choose standard metal zips with a clear specification.
How to protect yourself when ordering
- Work with a source that states the exact specification – line, size, teeth material, finish, slider type and tape colour.
- Ask for a sample before the production run and keep it as a reference for incoming inspection.
- Check random pieces from every delivery against the checklist above, not just the first box.
- Record the specification in the tech pack, so every subsequent order is identical.
- Do not choose on price alone – a significantly lower price for "genuine YKK" is the first warning sign.
What to do if in doubt
If you already have a batch of suspect zips, set aside a few pieces and do a simple test: 50–100 opening and closing cycles, a check of the lock under load and an inspection of the teeth afterwards. Compare the result with a sample from a reliable source. If there is a discrepancy, do not use the zip in products that will be sold as fitted with genuine YKK.
Incoming inspection in the factory: a practical procedure
In series production it helps if the check does not depend on one person's experience. Write a short procedure for the warehouse and apply it to every delivery:
- Check the packaging label against the order specification – size, length, finish, tape colour.
- Pull at least a few pieces from different cartons, not just the top one.
- Compare them with the reference sample for marking, finish tone and tape colour.
- Open and close each checked zip several times and test the lock.
- Record the result and the batch number, so there is a trail in case of a complaint.
This check takes minutes but saves cutting and sewing a whole run with the wrong zip.
