Gift and packaging ribbons are chosen according to the type of packaging, the style of the brand and the way they will be tied. Satin is used for a classic glossy bow, grosgrain for a matte and stable one, organza for a light sheer effect, and cotton or linen ribbon for a natural look. For businesses, ribbon on a roll is the most practical choice, because it gives all packages the same look.
Why the ribbon is an important part of the packaging
Packaging is the customer’s first physical contact with the product, and the ribbon is the detail that turns an ordinary box into a gift. For shops and brands it also has a practical role: it closes the box without glue, holds a card or tag in place and allows the box to be opened and closed again. The same ribbon on all of a brand’s packaging builds recognition, so that the customer associates the colour and material with a particular shop.
Which ribbons are suitable for gift bows
Satin ribbon
The most popular choice for gift bows. Smooth and glossy, it drapes softly and makes beautiful bows. Double-face satin looks the same on both sides – important when the ends of the bow hang loose. See satin ribbon.
Grosgrain ribbon
Matte, ribbed and denser. The bow keeps its shape without drooping, and printing on it is crisp. It suits modern, minimalist packaging and brands with a more austere style.
Organza
Sheer, light, with a fine sheen. It is used for drawstring pouches, small boxes, wedding and festive gifts. It looks airy but is not suitable for heavy boxes.
Velvet ribbon
A rich matte colour and a soft touch – for premium products, jewellery, winter and festive collections.
Cotton, linen and jute ribbon
A natural, handmade look. It combines with kraft paper and cardboard – a typical solution for eco brands, handmade cosmetics and bakeries.
Choosing by type of packaging
| Packaging | Recommended ribbon | Width |
|---|---|---|
| Small jewellery box | satin, velvet | 3–10 mm |
| Box for cosmetics or chocolate | satin, grosgrain | 10–25 mm |
| Bottle of wine or oil | satin, grosgrain, cotton | 6–16 mm |
| Drawstring pouch | organza, satin | 3–10 mm |
| Large gift box | satin, grosgrain | 25–40 mm |
| Kraft packaging, eco product | cotton, linen, jute | 6–15 mm |
Ribbon on a roll for shops and brands
For daily packing in a shop or an online warehouse, ribbon on a roll is the most convenient. Staff cut exactly the length they need, and the roll sits on a dispenser next to the packing table. It is important to plan:
- A standard ribbon length per package – measure the circumference of the box and add length for the bow and the ends. This helps you calculate annual consumption.
- One or two core colours – for recognition; seasonal colours are an addition.
- How the ends are cut – diagonally or with a V-notch so they do not fray. Synthetic ribbons can be heat-sealed.
- A reserve before the holiday seasons – demand for ribbons rises sharply before Christmas, Valentine’s Day and International Women’s Day (8 March).
Ribbons for bottles and special packaging
On bottles, the ribbon is usually tied around the neck and often holds a small card tag with a product description. Narrower ribbons (6–16 mm) that do not cover the main label are suitable here. Grosgrain and cotton ribbon do not slide on glass as easily as satin. On boxes with lids, the ribbon can be placed crosswise or on one side only, with a bow in the corner – this saves ribbon and looks modern.
Branding gift ribbons
The next step after choosing the colour is a ribbon with a logo or lettering. The brand name, printed or foil-stamped along the length of the ribbon, works as advertising with every delivery. The choice of method – printing, foil, sublimation or a woven-in logo – depends on the design and the quantity, and the ribbon can be combined with hang tags in the same style.
How to tie a beautiful bow on a package
Even the finest ribbon looks careless if the bow is tied unevenly. For a consistent look on all packages in the shop, rely on a simple, repeatable method. Pass the ribbon around the box, cross it on the top and turn it at a right angle so that it goes around the other side as well. Bring the ends back to the centre and tie a knot. Form a loop with one end, wrap the other end around it and pull the second loop through the opening. Even out the two loops and trim the ends to the same length.
For a fuller bow, use a wider or denser ribbon – grosgrain and double-face satin hold their shape best. If you are packing a large number of identical boxes, consider pre-made bows attached with an adhesive dot – this considerably reduces the packing time per order, and all parcels look the same.
Common mistakes with packaging ribbons
- Single-face satin for bows with loose ends – the back, more matte side shows.
- A ribbon that is too wide for a small box – the bow looks clumsy and hides the product.
- Organza on heavy boxes – the ribbon stretches and the bow comes undone.
- Different shades from different deliveries – order your core colour in sufficient quantity at once.
- Cutting the ends straight without sealing – they fray during transport.
