Horn Buttons for Suits and Jackets – Number, Size and Placement

The classic set of horn buttons for a suit includes 32L buttons (about 20 mm) for the jacket front, 24L (about 15 mm) for the sleeves and inside pocket and 24L–26L for the waistcoat, if there is one. A single-breasted jacket has one, two or three buttons at the front, and usually three or four on each sleeve. Horn buttons are chosen to match the fabric or one shade darker, polished for formal suits and matte for more informal styles.

Why horn is the classic choice for suits

Natural buffalo horn is the material associated with the tailoring tradition of the men’s suit. It is dense, pleasantly cool to the touch, with a deep natural pattern, and it has enough weight to lie calmly on the front. Unlike plastic, horn does not look “new” – it blends naturally with wool, cashmere, flannel and tweed. That is why, at the premium end, horn buttons are the preferred choice for jackets and suits.

How many buttons a suit needs

Style / positionNumber of buttonsTypical size
Single-breasted jacket, 1 button1 at the front32L
Single-breasted jacket, 2 buttons2 at the front32L
Single-breasted jacket, 3 buttons3 at the front30L–32L
Double-breasted jacket 6×26 at the front (+1 inside)32L–34L
Sleeve3–4 per sleeve24L
Inside pocket1–220L–24L
Waistcoat5–624L–26L
Trousers (waistband, back pockets, braces)2–820L–24L

1L = 0.635 mm. When ordering horn buttons for a run of suits, calculate the quantity by size and add spare buttons, which are usually attached to the label or put in a separate small bag.

Size according to style and cut

Size is not just a technical parameter. With wider lapels and looser cuts, a larger 34L button looks proportionate. With slim, modern jackets with narrow lapels, 30L–32L is preferred. On double-breasted jackets, where the buttons are arranged in two columns, the size is usually the same as on the single-breasted style or one step larger.

The sleeve buttons

The sleeve buttons are the ones connoisseurs use to judge a jacket. On ready-to-wear they are usually decorative and sewn onto a closed vent. On more expensive styles and bespoke garments the vent is functional, with working buttonholes. The buttons can be sewn side by side or “kissing” – slightly overlapping, which requires a thin button with a flat rim. Horn buttons for the sleeve must come from the same batch as the front ones so that the shade matches.

Colour and pattern against the fabric

  • Navy and grey suits – dark brown or almost black horn; for lighter greys, marbled buttons with lighter veins.
  • Black suit – black horn, even, without contrasting veins.
  • Brown, beige, tweed – marbled horn with honey and grey tones.
  • Summer linen suits – lighter horn or buttons with light areas.

Since every horn button is unique, during selection we make sure that the set for one jacket is harmonious – especially the visible buttons on the front.

Surface: gloss or matte

Horn buttons polished to a high gloss emphasise the formal character of a suit and suit smooth wool fabrics. Matte or semi-matte ones work well for flannel, tweed, corduroy and smart-casual jackets. For dinner jackets, tradition often prefers satin-covered buttons, but horn buttons in glossy black are also accepted.

Sewing horn buttons onto a jacket

  1. The front buttons are sewn on with a thread shank roughly as long as the thickness of the fabric at the buttonhole.
  2. A strong thread matching the button or the fabric is used.
  3. With four holes, the stitching can be parallel (=) or crossed (×); jackets usually favour parallel or “Z” stitching.
  4. Sleeve buttons are sewn on tightly, without a high shank, especially with “kissing” buttons.
  5. On the inside, under the front button, a small backing button is added on heavier fabrics.

Horn or imitation for a suit?

For premium collections, nothing matches the feel of natural horn. For larger runs and more affordable price levels, many brands use polyester imitation horn (faux horn) buttons, which are uniform and more economical. It is best to make the choice at the design stage, because it affects the positioning and price of the garment. You will find more about men’s buttons in the men’s buttons category.

Caring for a suit with horn buttons

Suits are usually dry cleaned, which horn buttons tolerate well. When pressing the front, work around the buttons or use a cloth, because horn does not like direct high heat. For dry cleaning some ateliers cover the buttons with foil – a sensible precaution for expensive garments.

Common mistakes

  • Front and sleeve buttons from different batches with different shades.
  • A button that is too large for a slim, modern jacket.
  • Sewing on without a shank, which puckers the fabric around the buttonhole.
  • Strongly contrasting veins on a strict formal suit.
  • No spare buttons with the finished garment.

Selecting the set

With natural horn, no two buttons are alike. That is why the set for one jacket is arranged by hand: the buttons closest in shade and pattern go on the front, where they are most visible, and the rest on the sleeves, waistcoat and trousers. In series production, this preparation is part of the manufacturer’s work and makes things considerably easier for the sewing room.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many buttons are there on a jacket sleeve?
Most often a jacket sleeve has three or four buttons. Three buttons are typical of more informal and sporty styles, four of classic business suits. The size is usually 24L, about 15 mm. The buttons can be decorative on a closed vent or functional with working buttonholes on more expensive and bespoke styles.
What size is the button on the front of a jacket?
The standard size for the front of a single-breasted jacket is 32L, about 20 mm in diameter. Slimmer, modern cuts use 30L, while double-breasted jackets and wider lapels use 32L–34L. It is important that the button matches the buttonhole length, so the size is decided at the pattern stage.
Which colour horn buttons for a navy suit?
For a navy suit the most classic choice is dark brown or almost black horn buttons, which blend calmly with the fabric. For a more informal look, marbled horn with moderately light veins can be chosen. Avoid strongly contrasting light buttons on a business suit, unless you want a deliberate modern accent.
