An invisible zip with lace is an invisible zip in which the ordinary woven tape is replaced by, or combined with, a decorative lace tape. YKK’s range includes such versions in the Conceal line. They are used in bridal and evening dresses, lingerie and delicate blouses, where the zip is not fully hidden under a lining and the tape is visible from the inside or through the sheer fabric.
What an invisible zip with lace is
The construction is the same as with a standard invisible zip: the coil faces inwards and hides in the seam after sewing. The difference is the tape – instead of a smooth polyester weave, it has a lace edge or is made entirely of lace. From the outside, the seam looks like an ordinary invisible zip, but on the inside the zip has a decorative, finished look.
This type of zip solves a problem every designer of delicate garments knows: with sheer fabrics and unlined dresses, the tape of an ordinary zip shows through as a solid stripe. Lace tape is lighter, more transparent and blends into the overall look.
When to use an invisible zip with lace
| Product | Why lace tape |
|---|---|
| Bridal dresses with a sheer back | The tape does not show through as a solid stripe |
| Unlined evening dresses | A finished look on the inside |
| Bodysuits and lingerie | Softness and lightness, matching the lace of the garment |
| Chiffon and tulle blouses | A light edge that does not weigh the garment down |
| Products where the inside is visible | A luxurious detail when dressing |
Advantages and limitations
Advantages
- Look on the inside – the product looks finished even when the reverse is on show.
- Softness – lace is more flexible and does not form a hard edge.
- Coordination – the zip fits into the lace aesthetic of lingerie and bridal dresses.
- Less show-through – with sheer fabrics, the stripe is lighter.
Limitations
- a narrower choice of colours and lengths compared with standard Conceal;
- a more delicate tape that requires care when sewing;
- a higher cost;
- the availability of specific models is confirmed with each inquiry.
How to sew in an invisible zip with lace tape
The principle is the same as with a standard invisible zip, but with a few particularities:
- Stabilise the fabric, not the tape. Fusible tape is placed on the seam allowance of the fabric, not on the lace, so that it is not visible.
- Use a fine needle so as not to break the lace threads.
- Reduce the presser foot pressure so that the lace does not stretch lengthwise.
- Do not iron directly – the lace and coil are sensitive to high temperature. Iron through a cloth and from the inside.
- Finish the bottom end by hand if it is visible – with a few stitches that attach the lace to the seam allowance.
Coordinating with the lace of the product
The lace tape of the zip rarely matches the pattern of the dress or lingerie lace exactly. The aim is not identity but harmony – a similar colour, similar density and pattern character. If the dress is made of dense guipure lace, choose a zip with a simpler lace tape so that it does not compete with the main material. Browse our lace if you are also looking for matching lace for appliqués or edges.
Colour
For bridal products, the rules are the same as with an ordinary invisible zip: compare the fabric with the sample in daylight and take care with the shades of white. Lace reflects light differently from smooth fabric, so check the match from a normal distance, not just up close.
Alternatives
If a suitable lace tape zip is not available in the required colour or length, there are two solutions:
- Standard YKK Conceal with a cover – an ordinary invisible zip is sewn in, and the tape on the inside is covered with a narrow lace or a facing.
- Lining around the zip – a narrow lining in the zip area hides the tape in sheer fabrics.
Standard Conceal is available in many more colours from the YKK colour card, which often makes this option more flexible.
For lingerie brands
In lingerie and bodysuits, zips are less common than in dresses, but when they are used – for example on corsets, bustiers and bodysuits with a back zip – they are in direct contact with the skin. Here the softness of the lace tape is a real advantage: it does not scratch or leave marks on the skin during prolonged wear. Lingerie often combines other delicate accessories as well – thin elastics, small rings and sliders, hooks and eyes – and all the trims should be in one tone. That is why it is good to plan the zip together with the other components and order samples at the same time.
A sample before deciding
Lace tape looks different in a photo and in real life. The density, transparency and sheen of the threads can only be assessed with a physical sample placed on the actual fabric. For bridal and evening collections, we recommend sewing the sample into a prototype and assessing both the face and the reverse before approving the style for production.
Common mistakes
- fusible tape on the lace, which is visible on the inside;
- a thick needle that breaks the threads;
- ironing with a hot iron directly on the zip;
- choosing without a sample – lace tape looks different in a photo.
